While all of the things you say about Thompson regarding opprotunity and position are true in maximizing his potential, they don't describe a meteoric ascent more extreme than any other in the history of the sport. Before last season, Tage Thomspon was just flat out terrible - maybe one of the worst hockey players I've ever seen. He couldn't skate, he couldn't shoot, he couldn't pass. He has no business in an NHL rink unless he had a ticket.
Then in 2021, he goes on to score more goals in one season than the previous 4 years of professional hockey (AHL included) COMBINED. All of a sudden the kid could skate a little bit and he could score like a top sniper. As the year went on he just got better and better. This year a lot of folks naturally assumed that he's have to regress a little but, because what he did last season was just bananas - except he showed up and is WAY better than he was last year having already matched his '21 point total through 49 games. That doesn't just happen because you get minutes and a position change. He didn't gradually improve. He went from awful to top 3 elite instantly.
If there's a steroid that teaches you how to play hockey, Tage took the whole bottle, because 2020 Tage and the version we have now aren't the same player.
A coach is not someone who is paid to make a team work.

The Sabres now have one of the best 1 2 center duos in the NHL in Tage and Cozens. The rise of Tage has been nothing like we've ever seen, literally. To go from an afterthought to a top 5 player in the world is mind boggling. And the scary thing is, i don't think he's even reached his ceiling yet...

Quibble: Bylsma never coached Thompson. It was Yeo (STL), Housley, Krueger, and Granato.
With his size and skill at centre he resembles Mario Lemieux. And no, I’m obviously not saying he’s as good but he does remind me of Lemieux with his great hands and reach.

It’s amazing what a coach can do in this league. Ralph Krueger and jack eichel both almost set that franchise back years because Krueger was absolutely atrocious and Eichel was a cancer and a waste of space. Thompson was on the verge of being put on waivers until Ralphie got fired and Donny Maetballs took over as interim coach. The minute he took over as interim head coach the Sabres went from being an unbearable joke in the league to all of a sudden playing like a team and scoring goals and Thompson just took off like a rocket. Rasmus Dahlin began to show why he was a generational defenseman and Jeff Skinner looked like the stud he is. Even guys like Victor Olloffson are just putting up points. Acquiring Alex Tuch and Peyton Krebs was the icing on the cake. They could squeak into the playoffs this year, but Don Gronato has done something special that makes this team so exciting to watch..
He already has 34 goals in the half way mark in the season and is on pace to not only eclipse last years goal totals but to surpass 50 goals this season. The question of him being a superstar should be unquestionable should he reach such benchmarks in the 2023 season.
