How to live longer? Tales about “the fountain of youth” have been passed down through centuries, yet we still haven’t managed to find it…or have we? The people of one small Greek island would have you believe so! Located in the Aegean Sea, Greece’s 98-square-mile island Ikaria is home to approximately 8,500 people. Many believe these people hold the secret to eternal youth. Well, maybe not “eternal” but 1/3 of Ikaria’s population does live to be in their 90s and even older, and the majority of them are in good health by the time they get there. So, what is their secret? These non-processed foods packed with all kinds of antioxidants seem to have an undeniable impact on their health. - The Ikarian people are very community-oriented, and being there for one’s neighbor no matter what seems to be their life motto. This way of thinking developed over time because of a pretty rough history not short of invasions by other nations. - Ikaria is full of rocky roads, which makes even short walks a little more strenuous. Ikarians do a ton of walking around. And since they’re so communal, a lot of this walking is to and from each other’s homes for visits. - Unlike most other people in the world, they don’t base their daily activities around what time it is. They also don’t make plans set in stone, they like to leave things open. - Thanks to the absence of clocks, the people of Ikaria listen to their bodies more. So, if they feel like taking a nap in the middle of the afternoon, they take one! - In Ikaria, nearly 40% of people don’t have jobs. While this sounds stressful, it’s actually part of what makes these people worry-free. - Something that experts studying Ikaria and other Blue Zones have noticed is that these people are very close with their families. The elders play a pretty significant role in their daily lives - there aren’t any old folks homes or anything like that. - Ikarian people love dancing and celebrating with each other and being their true authentic selves. Life is way more fun this way! - Instead of western medicinal practices, the people of Ikaria practice more natural medicine and stick to non-processed materials to heal the body. Suppose we let our life satisfaction depend on things challenging to obtain. In that case, we set ourselves up for stress, discontent, and insecurity. We tend to worry a lot about not having what we want, losing what we have, and the future not playing out as we desire. A much better alternative would be a minimalist mindset of abundance. If we experience no shortage in getting our needs met, we’ll quickly achieve a state of contentment. And the quickest way to reach abundance is by downgrading our needs. The less you want, the more you have. And when we have plenty, we care less about gain and loss; we’re less stressed about missing out and less fearful of change. This trick is done using a special “gimmick” that slides on to the eraser-end of the pencil. It should be the same color so that it blends in perfectly. - #2. The handkerchief has a hidden wiry ring that creates an illusion that there’s a glass under it. As for the glass itself, the magician already slid it into a secret hole in the table! - #3. The illusionist hides a folded card in his sleeve beforehand, replaces it with the viewer's at the right moment, and then rips it up. - #4. As you display the $1 bill while keeping that 100 concealed, you slyly slide it over until it’s hidden behind the top left corner of the dollar. - #5. While the illusionist shows the audience that the hat is absolutely empty, the rabbit is hidden under the table. The hardest part is getting the rabbit from the bag and into the hat without the audience noticing! - #6. The success of this trick depends on the assistant’s flexibility. - #7. The secret was in his shoes the whole time! They had holes in the heels that attached to little metal pegs in the floor. The shoes also had a sturdy support frame that came up on his legs quite high. - #8. The construction allows his assistant to move the mirror aside and replace it with the 2 panels so that he can crawl through. - #9. Houdini studied all kinds of locks his whole life and had an encyclopedic knowledge of handcuffs. He could guess which key would open this or that type of cuffs at first glance. - #10. The chamber’s special design was key for this trick. Since his body was displacing some water, it created an air pocket in the tank. Secondly, Houdini’s unmatched skills also played their role. - #11. What you can’t see as you try to peek at the show through your fingers is that those feet aren’t actually hers! There’s a second assistant underneath that box, and her feet are sticking out. - #12. It really is just smooth sleight-of-hand because there’s a tiny gap in one of the rings – he’s just sure to keep it hidden under his hand. - #13. After the curtain goes up in the beginning, the platform is slowly turned until the Statue is out of the audience’s line of vision. Current assets are cash and other assets that are expected to be converted to cash within a year. Non-current assets are longer-term investments that cannot be converted into cash quickly. Current liabilities are amounts due to be paid to creditors within twelve months. Non-current liabilities are amounts owed that are to be paid after the period of one year. Equity on the balance sheet is the book value of the shareholder capital. That’s how the balance sheet works on a conceptual level. Let’s now look into the balance sheet of a real-world company: retail company Walmart. Walmart’s fiscal year runs from February through January, so we’ll be reviewing the year-end balance sheet of January 31st, 2020. Current assets $61.8 billion, non-current assets $174.7 billion, adding up to total assets of $236.5 billion. Current liabilities $77.8 billion, non-current liabilities $77.1 billion, equity $81.6 billion. And as the word balance sheet suggests, the total amount owned equals the total amount owed. Per the accounting equation: assets equal liabilities plus equity. Let’s zoom into the balance sheet in more detail, and review what is in each of the balance sheet categories: current assets, non-current assets, current liabilities, non-current liabilities, and equity. Same five categories, just a lot more detail to dig into. In the American format of the balance sheet, assets are listed from most liquid to least liquid. Liabilities are listed from due first to due last. I will take you through the main line items. The balance sheet: an overview of what a company owns and what a company owes at a point in time, which can tell very interesting stories about the financial situation of a company. If you’re looking to burn calories, improve flexibility, and build lean muscle, yoga could be exactly what you need. You can definitely lose some pounds and torch away stubborn belly fat. A yoga sesh may not be the most intense workout, but its main purpose is to keep all the muscles fit and toned. It also has different difficulty levels – from beginner to advanced. If you’re just starting out, don’t even attempt the advanced poses! Yoga is logical and progressive. You start from the easier poses and gradually work your way toward the difficult ones. Funny enough, one of the most challenging poses is called Savasana. It might look like someone just lying on the ground doing nothing, but don’t be fooled! But that’s a lot harder than it sounds! Hi guys, Welcome to our first week of wellness month! Some of you might remember that during quarantine I completed a Pilates Teacher training course together with my friend Jason. For over three years we have been working on developing an Interceptor project in the Rio Motagua basin in Guatemala, which suffers yearly trash tsunamis, devastating the environment. Subscribe to stay updated: 🤍 Geographic and municipal conditions mean an estimated 20,000 tonnes of plastic currently flows through the Rio Motagua into the Caribbean Sea on an annual basis. Based on this number, this one river alone is responsible for an estimated 2% of global plastic emissions into the oceans. In May, we trialed our Interceptor Trashfence, aiming to intercept up to 20M kg of plastic flowing through the Rio Motagua into the Caribbean Sea each year. The pilot phase is completed, we’ve disassembled the Trashfence, and we’ll study the learnings from this exciting trial.
