When the theoretical physicist Leonard Susskind encountered a head-scratching paradox about black holes, he turned to an unexpected place: computer science. In nature, most self-contained systems eventually reach thermodynamic equilibrium ... but not black holes. The interior volume of a black hole appears to forever expand without limit. But why? Susskind had a suspicion that a concept called computational complexity, which underpins everything from cryptography to quantum computing to the blockchain and AI, might provide an explanation. He and his colleagues believe that the complexity of quantum entanglement continues to evolve inside a black hole long past the point of what’s called “heat death.” Now Susskind and his collaborator, Adam Brown, have used this insight to propose a new law of physics: the second law of quantum complexity, a quantum analogue of the second law of thermodynamics. Astronomers have made a ground-breaking discovery of an ultra-massive black hole that’s 32 billion times the mass of the Sun. This black hole is so huge that its event horizon, the point of no return for matter and light, spans a diameter that’s 1300 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. This means if it were placed at the center of the solar system, its edge would lie way beyond interstellar space. The ultra-massive black hole is located at the heart of a galaxy in the central region of a massive cluster, 2.7 billion light-years away from us. What's most remarkable is that astronomers utilized a never-before-used technique to measure the black hole's mass, marking a historic achievement in the field. So how did astronomers determine the mass of the black hole? How is it even possible to find the black hole’s properties without actually observing it? While they are indeed formed from incredibly dense objects (collapsed stars), the black hole itself is nothing. Black holes could have played a crucial role in the emergence of life. Ironically, the Solar System is in orbit around a supermassive black hole located in the center of our Milky Way galaxy. And one day, we might fall into a black hole. If you were out in space exploring and you didn't realize you were coming upon a black hole, you would not notice that anything terrible was about to happen. Eventually, however, you would succumb to a terrifying fate. Just 3,000 light-years from Earth is a black hole visible to the naked eye. Thankfully, we are a safe distance from this stellar black hole and many others like it.
