I was too eager to play with numerous radio setups in one day, it was a very hot day as well, that's my excuse for making a pigs ear out of both radio set ups. I did however look back on the day with a sense of enjoyment, I just wished I'd told my face that on the day. Inside the International Space Station, Expedition 25 commander Doug Wheelock gave a tour of the Russian segment of the orbiting complex, including the Soyuz spacecraft docked there. Wheelock showed off the station's HAM radio, using the call sign "NA1SS," to talk with people on the ground as the station flies overhead at 17,500 miles per hour. Wheelock, and Flight Engineers Shannon Walker and Fyodor Yurchickin all will return home to Earth this Thursday, Nov. 25.

There are many aspects to ham radio. This is just one of them, working DX (over seas) contacts for competition or just for a chat. Here I show you a sample of contacting a few stations at random. This is only part of ham radio, I realize a lot of these are just quick contacts but it feels nice to know your signal is reaching other parts of the world. Near the end of the video I met a nice person and we had a long chat, most of it edited out of the video for time of course. So in ham radio you can also just ragchew and make friends and chat for a while, or you can get into contesting and make quick contacts and move on. Something for everyone I guess.

To start a contact, the best way is to call "CQ". A CQ is a general call to get a random contact. Before calling CQ, listen to find a clear frequency. If the frequency seems clear, ask if the frequency is in use. If nobody replies, you’re clear to call. Keep your CQ very short. If no one answers, call again.
