Why does climate overshoot matter? | Kim Campbell | TEDxWhistler

The 2015 Paris Agreement established a goal of limiting global warming to an increase of 1.5 degrees, but the world is currently on track to overshoot that critical limit. Ms. Kim Campbell shares why we need to think about the unthinkable so we can better prepare for what overshoot will mean for our world, and what solutions we can explore to help future generations. As Canada’s first and only female Prime Minister, Ms. Kim Campbell has spent much of her life breaking barriers for women. She has served at all three levels of government in Canada, and after leaving politics she served as the Canadian Consul General in Los Angeles. She later moved on to teach at the Harvard Kennedy School, after which she became an international leader of leaders with organizations such as the International Women's Forum and the Club de Madrid. Drawing on her extraordinary experience as an academic and a leader, she served as the Founding Principal of the Peter Lougheed Leadership College at the University of Alberta from 2014–2018. Ms. Campbell speaks widely on issues related to leadership, international politics, democratization, climate change, gender, and Canadian/American relations. Beyond Politics - Kim Campbell

Kim Campbell, Canada's 19th prime minister, was one of two girls born to George Campbell and Phyllis Cook in Port Alberni, B.C. Campbell earned a BA in political science from the University of British Columbia and did graduate studies at the London School of Economics, studying Soviet government before returning to B.C. to pursue a law degree. In 1986 Campbell was elected for the first time as the MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey under the Social Credit Party of Bill Vander Zalm. Two years later Campbell had switched to federal politics and became the P.C. MP for Vancouver Centre. Brian Mulroney awarded Campbell with the justice portfolio in 1990, where she was responsible for introducing Canada's rape shield law. In June 1993 she defeated Jean Charest to become the new leader of the party and Prime Minister of Canada. Campbell's tenure as this country's first female prime minister was short-lived however, as by October of that year the mood of the country had sharply changed and Campbell led the party to its worst defeat in history, winning only two seats. Campbell left politics for good that night. She became successful as a lecturer at Harvard, Canada's consul general in Los Angeles, the chair of the Council of Women World Leaders and several other organizations dedicated to improving governance in the world's democracies. Catherine Clark spoke to Campbell about her life Beyond Politics.

We all experience fear in our lives. We can face challenges that make us feel stressed where we might even be afraid to act. But what if we could step up and act with courage? What if we could be the leader and the team member that could be afraid and brave at the same time? It’s what you do when you are scared that matters. And when you take action in the face of fear, when you create a culture of courage, then you will also create an environment of trust that builds deeper relationships, inspires loyalty, and enables your team to perform at their best. Kim will share her story about a life-changing combat experience while weaving in leadership lessons that will motivate and inspire your team to be more confident when faced with adversity or uncertainty. She will also provide practical ideas and examples to improve trust and to help your team prepare to face challenges in their personal or professional lives.
