Great Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica L.) is a good plant for attracting pollinators with its brilliant blue-violet flowers in mid-late summer when many other things in the garden are starting to look tired. Blue Lobelia is a native perennial plant to the eastern half of the United States. It is a woodland plant that prefers part-sun and even moisture. (Do not allow it to fully dry out or it starts to get a bit "crispy" around the leaf edges.) It grows to about 1-3 feet high. It tolerates most any soil type heavy clay to sandy. To propagate it, divide clumps in the spring. It does also re-seed a bit especially in a damp yard, but it is very easy to pull up where you don’t want it. The white version is just as tough, though I have found it harder to propagate it. It has no pest problems, is deer-resistant, and tolerates drought. There aren't many blue flowers out there - and lobelia earinus definitely does not disappoint if tended to properly! Of course there are other colors of lobelia earinus, but I prefer the sky blue cultivar! I'll tell you how to successfully germinate and harden these plants off - it can be tricky! I also touch on saving the seeds at the end of the season, my tips can save you a lot of hassle and tedious work! Remember to water your lobelia generously if it is in a container or a very hot area on your patio or garden. The blooms will shrivel up and won't perform well if they are dried out/stressed. In this video we make tincture from the Lobelia we harvested a few weeks ago. Lobelia can be used in several ways medicinally but tincture is the most common form of use, and generally regarded as a safer way to take Lobelia. The uses of Lobelia can range from just a supporting herb in a larger concoction for many ailments, to clearing/soothing the lungs, to produce sweat or vomit, to pain relief and easing tension in muscles. Lobelia's uses are many and in the 18th century was one of the most widely used herbs. Tincture is easy to make assuming you have an understanding of the plant you're using, and requires few materials and just a little time. Before making tincture from any plant you should know: How to identify it, how to harvest/what parts to use, what time of year to harvest, if the plant is safe for you to use. Things like medications you may be taking, medical conditions you may have, and allergies are some of the big concerns. Here I am planting a Lobelia called Queen Victoria, also known as the Cardinal Flower. But did you know there are 415 species of Lobelia? And they are all so varied. There are annuals, perennials and shrubs. Some are hardy and others are tender. Some are ground covers, some are trailers and the one I am planting in my garden today is a tall and upright perennial which can be divided every other year. The Cardinal Flower variety was used for medicinal treatments, including the treatment of syphilis (would you believe) at the beginning of the 19th Century and then for bronchial and asthma ailments at the beginning of the 20th Century. It was also used by the Appalacians in America for a totally different purpose, all of which I do not recommend but explain in full detail in this video!! All makes for a very interesting history of this beautiful plant which should provide some late Summer and early Autumn interest in my garden. In this video we harvest some Lobelia, get it inside to clean it up and then put it into the dry box to get it ready to make medicine from. Lobelia is a very potent medicinal plant and it's recommended that you check with a doctor before using Lobelia to prevent interactions with any medications you may be taking. A WORD OF CAUTION: Lobelia is very potent and possesses arterial sedative properties. If not careful this plant can put you into a coma or worse, so make sure you 100% know what you're doing before harvesting this plant and using it. The proper time to harvest Lobelia is from the end of July till the middle of October. Before harvesting any plant you should learn how to positively identify it. Blue Lobelia is a native plant of North America, Europe, and Asia. With its bright scarlet blossoms, South Africa, Lobelia blue Cardinal Flower is a particularly well-known species. It's a short-lived perennial that seems a lovely addition to your summer garden. Lobelia Siphilitica is a perennial border that grows to medium size of 1 m by 0.3 m. Drought levels are low tolerance. The soil types required for growth are bright, Full Sun, Part Shade, Shade, Moist and Wet Soil, Clay, Loam, and Sand. Lavender blue flowers on the top stem are grouped. Bright blue flowers bloom in an extended cluster on a leafy stem on axil bracts. It usually has a single, erect stem 20 to 59 inches tall or more. The stem is either hairless or hardly hairy. The serrated, alternating leaves are narrowly oval. Leaves range from 3 to 4.75 inches in length and 0.6 to 1.6 inches in width. In an extended cluster, 4 to 12 inches long flowers are grouped. A detailed look at one year in the life of Indian tobacco (Lobelia inflata). These images and narrative can help to accurately identify the plant during different seasons of the year.
In this video we go over the identification factors of Blue Lobelia, or Great Lobelia. A species that is common in moist areas and produces blue flowers typical of a Lobelia in shape. Unlike L. Inflata, this plant sticks out very well and can be seen easily. Easy to identify this medicinal plant is considered similar to Lobelia Inflata, though weaker to some. It's uses range from colds and fevers, to worms and syphilis. Which is where it derives it's Latin name, Siphilitica. It can be used in teas, tinctures, poultices, and more. It also doesn't contain the severe sedative properties Inflata is known for having. Frequently found in the fall while it's in flower, it can be seen next other moisture loving plants such as Boneset. It grows to a height of 2-3 ft. but can reach up to 5 ft. in height. Tematem dzisiejszego odcinka z cyklu „Balkony i Tarasy” będą lobelie. Zapraszam. Lobelie, w naturalnym środowisku, można spotkać w Ameryce Północnej, Ameryce Południowej i Afryce. Są to rośliny jednoroczne o pokroju płożącym, czy też przewieszającym się, ale dość zwartym oraz niezliczonych cieniutkich pędach i lancetowatych liściach. Na końcach tych pędów i w ich kątach pojawiają się niewielkie kwiaty, bardzo często w takich obfitościach, że tworzą one zamknięte plamy barw. Ze względu na pokrój tej rośliny radzi się ją uprawiać w wiszących pojemnikach lub w wysokich donicach, które umożliwią swobodny wzrost lobelii. Możemy je sadzić pojedynczo, lub wykorzystać je jako przewieszający się akcent w kompozycji wielogatunkowej. Rośliny te preferują stanowiska jasne, ale nie w prażącym słońcu, dobrze byłoby im zapewnić w ciągu dnia przejściowo lekki cień. Lobelie, podobnie jak pelargonie czy surfinie są ciepłolubne, zatem na balkonach lub tarasach ustawiamy je najwcześniej po 15 maja i mogą kwitnąć do pierwszych przymrozków. Aczkolwiek zdarza się, że w czasie największych upałów, w lipcu lub sierpniu rośliny te zaprzestają kwitnienia. Wtedy możemy je przyciąć, np. do 2/3 wysokości i powinny obsypać się kwiatami ponownie jesienią. Dominującym kolorem dla lobelii jest kolor niebieski, w różnych odcieniach. Te sadzonki przygotowałam własnoręcznie. Wysiałam je wczesną wiosną i muszę przyznać, że dość długo czekałam aż zakwitną. Dostępne są również lobelie w kolorze białym, czerwonym i fioletowym, ale nasiona zazwyczaj pozwalają nam na uprawę okazów niebieskich bądź fioletowych. Jednakże, wysiane przeze mnie fioletowe nasiona dały kwiaty bardziej niebieskie niż fioletowe, a odmiana biała, którą kupiłam kiedyś w sklepie ogrodniczym po kilku miesiącach zrobiła się błękitna. Barwa niebieska zatem nie daje o sobie zapomnieć w przepadku tej rośliny. Nasiona lobelii są bardzo drobne. Wysiewamy je w lutym lub w marcu, w dość płytkim pojemniku. Wschodzą bez większych problemów. Problemem mogą się jedynie okazać larwy ziemiórki, które młode siewki potrafią zniszczyć, a raczej zjeść, w ciągu kilku dni. Nasiona umieszczamy na wilgotnym podłożu do siewu i pikowania i delikatnie przygniatamy, nie przysypujemy już ziemią. Przykrywamy folią lub szkłem, pamiętając o wietrzeniu. Po mniej więcej dwóch miesiącach, można je przesadzić, dzieląc jednocześnie na mniejsze grupy. Ja swoją rozsadę podzieliłam np. na 6 doniczek, w których czekały aż trafią na miejsce docelowe. Ja natomiast czekałam aż zakwitną. I tak czekaliśmy do lipca. Gdybym przesadziła je wcześniej do większego pojemnika, prawdopodobnie zakwitłyby nieco wcześniej. Podłoże do uprawy lobelii powinno być żyzne i przepuszczalne, umiarkowanie wilgotne. Warto dbać o to, aby ziemia, w której rosną była stale wilgotna. Odpowiednia będzie tu ziemia ogrodowa lub podłoże dla roślin balkonowych czy też domowych. Nie należy dopuszczać aby ziemia całkowicie obeschła, bo wtedy lobelia obumiera, ani, żeby rośliny stały w wodzie, bo wtedy mogą zagniwać. Dlatego donice zawsze powinny mieć otwory drenażowe. Oprócz tradycyjnej lobelii przylądkowej możemy uprawiać także lobelię szkarłatną, tu akurat w odmianie 'Scarlet'. Możemy ją samodzielnie posadzić w donicy lub może być ona częścią kompozycji wielogatunkowej. Lobelia szkarłatna ma pokrój wzniesiony i kwiaty o barwie czerwonej. W przeciwieństwie do lobelii przylądkowej, nie jest to roślina jednoroczna, a bylina odporna na mróz. Można ją zatem uprawiać w donicy przez kilka lat lub potem przesadzić do ogrodu. Może dorastać do 90 cm wysokości, będzie więc górować nad innymi roślinami w tej kompozycji. A towarzystwem dla niej będzie żurawka, o czerwono-bordowych liściach. Również wieloletnia bylina, która przetrwa polską zimę nawet w donicy. Akcentem przewieszającym się będzie mulenbekia, pnącze o delikatnych, drobnych liściach i czerwonawej łodydze. Nie jest to roślina całkowicie mrozoodporna, ale na czas silnych przymrozków możemy przenieść ją do domu. Z resztą, wiele osób uprawia ją jako domową roślinę doniczkową. W taki sposób możemy sobie stworzyć donicę z roślinami, które będzie ozdobą naszego balkonu lub tarasu nie jeden sezon, ale kilka lat.
