When we arrive in Murghab, the Horse Festival is in full swing or better said already over for the first day. But we learn that the next day the disciplines are identical so that we haven't missed anything. Many people sit or walk around with their children and are happy about the party that brings people together. Again and again, we see one or two riders on one horse in between. We decide to leave the place again and to come back tomorrow. Instead, we want to explore the market. The shops at the market are all housed in containers, which is not particularly unusual in this region. We ask if we can film some of them from the inside, which one allows us. The range of goods seems to be rich, probably influenced by the weather. We can imagine that the supply does not work quite so well in winter. But this day many shops are closed, and only a few people are on the move as most of the inhabitants are at the Horse Festival. So we make a short walk through the village to gain some impressions. In the meantime, some guests have gathered in front of the hotel Pamir and enjoy a drink. It is warm weather, and most of the people want to be outside. We meet some interesting people, most of them are bicycle tourists. One is Nigel Smith, whom we meet in the lobby of the hotel. He tells us that he has been on the road for six years. In 2011 he left Canada by bicycle for the first time. The owner of the hotel is a friend of our driver, both are actually teachers. Our driver is a Chinese teacher, the hotelier is a German teacher, which is of course very pleasant for us. The next morning we go for a little walk to see the sunrise. It is a nice mood to see the first rays of sun appear in the east, over the mountain ranges of the eastern Pamirs. The over 7000 m high peaks on the Chinese side penetrate only slowly through the clouds. In the west reddish light illuminates the first mountain peaks. Here, at 3600 m above sea level, the air is actually very clean. But the low temperatures, that can also fall below 0 degrees in the summer nights, force the people to heat. Only peat or cattle dung is available as a heating material. Wir erfahren aber, dass am nächsten Tag die Disziplinen identisch sind, so dass wir nicht wirklich etwas verpasst haben. Viele Menschen mit ihren Kindern sitzen oder gehen herum und freuen sich über das Fest, das die Menschen zusammen bringt. Immer wieder dazwischen auch ein Reiter oder auch zwei auf einem Pferd. Wir beschließen den Platz wieder zu verlassen und morgen wiederzukommen. Statt dessen wollen wir den Markt erkunden. Die Geschäfte des Marktes sind alle in Containern untergebracht, was aber nicht sonderlich unüblich in dieser Region ist. Wir fragen, ob wir einige von Innen filmen dürfen, was man uns auch erlaubt. Das Warenangebot scheint reichhaltig zu sein, vermutlich wird das auch ein wenig durch die Witterung beeinflusst. Wir können uns vorstellen, dass die Versorgung im Winter nicht ganz so gut klappt. Allerdings sind an diesem Tag auch viele Geschäfte geschlossen und nur wenige Menschen unterwegs, da die meisten Bewohner bei den Reiterspielen sind. So spazieren wir ein wenig durch den Ort um Eindrücke zu sammeln. Vor dem Hotel Pamir haben sich in der Zwischenzeit einige Gäste versammelt und genießen ein Getränk. Die Witterung ist sehr warm, so dass sich die meisten im Freien aufhalten möchten. Wir treffen eine Reihe interessanter Menschen, die meisten sind Fahrradtouristen. Einer ist Nigel Smith, den wir in der Lobby des Hotels treffen. Er erzählt uns, dass er bereits seit sechs Jahren unterwegs ist. 2011 hat er Kanada erstmals mit dem Fahrrad verlassen. Der Besitzer des Hotels ist ein Freund unseres Fahrers, Beide sind eigentlich Lehrer. Unser Fahrer ist Chinesisch Lehrer, der Hotelier ist Deutschlehrer, was für uns natürlich sehr erfreulich ist. Am nächsten Morgen machen wir einen kleinen Rundgang um den Sonnenaufgang zu erleben. Es ist eine herrliche Stimmung, wenn im Osten die ersten Sonnenstrahlen über den Bergketten des östlichen Pamirs erscheinen. Die über 7000 m hohen Spitzen auf der Chinesischen Seite dringen nur langsam durch die Wolken. Actually, we should stay 2 days in Alichur. But our tour guide hears that the annual horse games take place in Murghab. So he changes the booking and the next day we travel from Alichur to Murghab. We head east. Already after a short time, we arrive at a small river that dams up to a small lake at this point. The water is crystal clear and has a turquoise green color. It is the habitat of a densely packed fish swarm. A prophet would allegedly have taken a bath here. After we have covered about a third of the distance to Murghab, we turn right and cross a small village. Due to the lack of a bridge, we have to drive through a small river. Then we reach the tomb of a Chinese commander. He came once with a caravan along the early Silk Road, which leads through the Wakhan Valley. Here he had died somewhat surprising, and his companions built this tomb for him. Recently one erected a fence around the tomb because there are also graves of locals around the tomb. And the tourists have run carelessly over the graves again and again. We return to the Pamir highway, but before we observe the inhabitants of a yurt village with the production of Yak cheese. A large herd grazes in the valley. Again and again, we see bicycle tourists. Although we have high respect for their accomplishments, it is not is not without danger to cycling through the area. In 2018, four bicycle tourists were murdered by IS terrorists on open country roads. After another third of our way to Murghab, we turn right into a wide valley that almost looks like a desert. Just a few short tufts of grass grow here. There are only a few tire tracks left, at which our drivers orientate themselves. We reach a rock cave that lies on half height in the midst of a slope. Here, some prehistoric people have painted petroglyphs on the wall. Such petroglyphs belong to the first cultural testimonies of mankind and belong to the UNESCO-World heritage. The Nayzatash Pass with a height of 4137 m is the highest point of the day before we enter the valley of Murghab at an altitude of 3600 m. An artificial snow leopard marks the provincial border to Murghab. So wird kurzerhand umgebucht und am nächsten Tag reisen wir bereits weiter von Alichur nach Murghob. Es geht Richtung Osten. Bereits nach kurzer Zeit kommen wir zu einem kleinen Fluss, der sich an dieser Stelle zu einem kleinen See staut. Das Wasser ist kristallklar und zeigt eine herrliche türkisgrüne Farbe. Es ist der Lebensraum eines dicht gedrängten Schwarms von Fischen. Angeblich hätte hier ein Prophet gebadet. Nachdem wir ungefähr ein Drittel der Strecke nach Murghob zurückgelegt haben, biegen wir rechts ab und durchqueren ein kleines Dorf. Mangels Brücke müssen wir durch einen kleinen Fluss fahren. Danach erreichen wir das Grabmal eines chinesischen Feldherren,. Er kam einst mit einer Karawane die frühe Seidenstraße entlang, die durch das Wakhan Valley führt. Hier war er überraschend gestorben und seine Begleiter errichteten ihm dieses Grabmal. In letzter Zeit wurde ein Zaun darum herum errichtet, da sich um das Grabmal auch einige Gräber von Einheimischen befinden über die immer wieder Touristen achtlos hinweg gelaufen sind. Wir kehren zurück zum Pamir Highway, doch vorher beobachten wir noch Bewohner eines Jurtendorfes bei der Herstellung von Yak-Käse. Eine große Herde weidet in der Talsenke. Immer wieder sehen wir Fahrradtouristen. Obwohl wir hohen Respekt vor deren Leistungen haben, ist es nicht ganz ungefährlich so durch die Gegend zu Radeln. 2018 wurden vier Fahrradtouristen von IS Terroristen auf offener Landstraße ermordet. Nach einem weiteren Drittel der Strecke nach Murghob zweigen wir rechts ab, in ein weitläufiges Tal, das schon fast einen Wüstencharakter hat. Nur wenige kurze Grasbüschel wachsen hier noch. Es gibt auch nur noch einige Reifenspuren, an denen sich unsere Fahrer orientieren. Wir erreichen eine Felshöhle, die inmitten eines Abhangs auf halber Höhe liegt. Hier haben einige prähistorische Menschen Petroglyphen an die Wand gemalt. Solche Petroglyphen zählen zu den ersten kulturellen Zeugnissen der Menschheit und sind UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Der Nayzatash Pass mit 4137 m Höhe ist der höchste Punkt des Tages bevor es in das Tal von Murghob auf 3600 m Höhe geht. Ein künstlicher Schneeleopard markiert die Provinzgrenze zu Murghob. We crossed the border from Kyrgyzstan into Tajikistan and drove over the highest point on the Pamir Highway the Ak Batan Pass (15,300 ft/ 4,655 meters).
