서울시 첫 자율주행 셔틀버스, 오늘부터 시내 달린다 South Korea has been showing steady progress in the development of self-driving vehicles. Fleets of autonomous cars and taxis are already in operation. From Thursday, the capital began running its first autonomous shuttle bus. Song Yoo-jin provides a glimpse of what to expect. South Korea's capital city Seoul is cruising its way to becoming smarter. One way it's doing that is through the use of autonomous, or self-driving vehicles. The city's first self-driving shuttle bus hit the roads on Thursday after a more than year-long joint effort between the city government and 42dot, a domestic autonomous vehicle startup. "One of our audacious goals is becoming an autonomous driving city. We've already launched and are operating self-driving taxis in the Sangam-dong and Gangnam-gu areas. And with this bus, we're moving closer to establishing a self-driving public transport network." "Right now I'm at Cheonggye plaza, the start of this self-driving bus’s route. This is the bus and as you can see it's not that big. Inside, however, it's packed with cutting-edge technology that guarantees convenience and security for passengers." The 8-seater vehicle is at Level 4, or high driving automation, which means that it's able to perform all safety-critical driving functions while monitoring the road ahead. We could see that the bus self-navigated its way through narrow roads and jammed streets during our ride-along. But for the sake of safety, there's a driver behind the wheel to take control when necessary. And to provide a comfortable riding experience, there's a full-glass roof, large windows, and a widescreen upfront. "This area surrounding the Cheonggyecheon stream is extremely challenging not only for drivers but also self-driving vehicles as well, as there's a lot of traffic and unexpected situations. So by running through this route, we believe the bus will compile helpful data that will help improve the overall quality and stability of its autonomous driving system. " The city aims to deploy three of these self-driving buses by the end of this year. They'll be traveling a 3-point-4 kilometer route in downtown Seoul every day except for Sundays at free of charge to passengers. Those who wish to hop on and take a ride around can do so from Friday morning. You can experience autonomous driving buses in Seoul. I rode a autonomous driving bus that circulates around Cheonggyecheon Plaza. You can request to board this bus through the app. (App: 'TAP!', English only) I made a video about where to get on the bus, how to use the app, and the experience of riding the autonomous driving bus. It is not a fully autonomous driving bus. Sections that require human driving, such as construction sections, do not drive autonomously, but manually. Therefore, a driver is on board to prepare for unexpected situations. This autonomous driving bus is currently operating free of charge and can be experienced at three locations in Seoul.🚌 1. Sangam Digital City Course (app reservation required) 2. Cheonggyecheon Course (app reservation required) 3. Gyeongbokgung Course (no app reservation required) The app used in the video must be subscribed to a mobile phone carrier in Korea, and it is a method of logging in after personal authentication of the mobile phone. Since the start of the pandemic, 21 delivery workers in South Korea have died. Unions blame overwork. The Koreans even have a word for death by overwork: 'gwarosa'. We all rely on home deliveries to get us through the pandemic but do we ever spare a thought for the workers who bring them to us? As demand for home deliveries explodes, the pressure on warehouse sorters and drivers has become relentless. Lee Seong Wook, 44, is a delivery driver. He works six days a week from early in the morning until late at night. “I'd be lying if I said it isn't tough for me. But it’s a matter of survival. My children won't eat if I don't earn.” Lee’s colleague, 47-year-old driver Im Gwang Soo, recently suffered a massive brain haemorrhage and fell into a coma. His life is hanging in the balance. Before his collapse, Im Gwang Soo had been working over 90 hours a week. As companies compete with each other to offer faster delivery times, distribution workers and drivers have borne the brunt, putting in longer and longer hours. The ABC’s South Korea correspondent Carrington Clarke goes on the road with the drivers and hears stories of their struggles as they race against the clock to deliver more packages than ever before. He rides with 61-year-old driver Huh Wonjea, the son of an activist and fighter in the Korean Independence Movement. Mr Huh says South Koreans worked hard to rebuild their country after the war, but not everyone is reaping the rewards. “The whole country’s been developing, but still in terms of the fair distribution of the assets or human rights… not really fairly developed yet.” Lee Seong Wook is a branch leader of the Delivery Workers’ Union. He’s determined that his generation will be the one to force change. “If our generation can't change it, it’ll be passed down to the next generation and then what we sacrifice for our children would be meaningless. “ It’s not just the drivers who are suffering. Those working in the distribution centres are also being pushed to their limits and beyond. 27-year-old Jang Deokjoon died of a heart attack. He’d been working long hours in the “fulfillment centre” of e-commerce company Coupang, described as the “Amazon” of South Korea. The government ruled it was “death by overwork”. “These really clever people used their brains only to work out how to squeeze as much blood from the workers as possible within the boundaries of the law”, says Deokjoon’s mother. In response to union pressure, some companies have introduced restrictions on delivering parcels after 9pm. But many drivers still have parcels left. If they don’t deliver them, their workload the following day will be even greater, so they keep working. For any food items they deliver after the 9pm cutoff, they’ll pay late fees. They’re damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Dead on Arrival is a timely and cautionary tale of what happens when workers are pushed to the limit in the name of consumer convenience and company profits. “If consumers don’t start thinking about it there will be other victims. Do you really think it’s okay to turn a blind eye or force someone to be sacrificed for your convenience?”, asks Deokjoon’s mother. 서울시 첫 자율주행 셔틀버스, 오늘부터 시내 달린다 South Korea has been showing steady progress in the development of self-driving vehicles, with fleets of autonomous cars and taxis already in operation. And from today, the capital Seoul began running its first autonomous shuttle bus. Our Song Yoo-jin has the details. South Korea's capital city Seoul is cruising its way to becoming smarter. One way it's doing that is through the use of autonomous, or self-driving vehicles. The city's first self-driving shuttle bus hit the roads on Thursday after a more than year-long joint effort between the city government and 42dot, a domestic autonomous vehicle startup. "One of our audacious goals is becoming an autonomous driving city. We've already launched and are operating self-driving taxis in the Sangam-dong and Gangnam-gu areas. And with this bus, we're moving closer to establishing a self-driving public transport network." "Right now I'm at Cheonggye plaza, the start of this self-driving bus’s route. This is the bus and as you can see it's not that big. Inside, however, it's packed with cutting-edge technology that guarantees convenience and security for passengers." The 8-seater vehicle is at Level 4, or high driving automation, which means that it's able to perform all safety-critical driving functions while monitoring the road ahead. We could see that the bus self-navigated its way through narrow roads and jammed streets during our ride-along. But for the sake of safety, there's a driver behind the wheel to take control when necessary. And to provide a comfortable riding experience, there's a full-glass roof, large windows, and a widescreen upfront. "This area surrounding the Cheonggyecheon stream is extremely challenging not only for drivers but also self-driving vehicles as well, as there's a lot of traffic and unexpected situations. So by running through this route, we believe the bus will compile helpful data that will help improve the overall quality and stability of its autonomous driving system. " The city aims to deploy three of these self-driving buses by the end of this year. They'll be traveling a 3-point-4 kilometer route in downtown Seoul every day except for Sundays at free of charge to passengers. Those who wish to hop on and take a ride around can do so from Friday morning. A man in South Korea who opened a plane door mid-air causing panic onboard as wind rushed through the cabin, has been arrested. All 194 passengers survived the Asiana Airlines flight which was travelling from the popular holiday island of Jeju, to Daegu, some 148 miles south of the capital, Seoul, but about a dozen were taken to hospital after fainting or having breathing difficulties. The plane was about 250 metres above the ground when a door on the left-hand-side was thrown open. From this week, people in Sangam-dong in western Seoul can use these driverless cars to move about. Our Shin Ye-eun went out to try for herself. "There are many ways people can get around in Seoul. From subways to buses and taxis. But from Thursday, visitors to Sangam-dong have a new option. Self-driving vehicles." From last year, Seoul Metropolitan City has been test-running its first autonomous vehicle hailing service. Finally, from this week... it has started commercializing this service to visitors in the Sangam-dong neighborhood of western Seoul's Mapo-gu District. There are a total of four driverless vehicles available. They all follow two designated routes... picking up and dropping off passengers at specific locations around the neighborhood. "Right now I'm calling a driverless vehicle to go to DMC station. If you see right here, I can choose where I will get on and off using the app called "TAP." The app then calls the nearest vehicle. Regardless of how far you go and how many people you're riding with... each ride costs 2-thousand won...which is a little over a dollar." The car moves by itself at almost all times.
