How hard was it to invade Taiwan / Formosa in the 17th Century? We examine the three successful conquests of the island from 1624-1683: the initial colonization by the Dutch East India Company (1624-62), the takeover by Ming loyalist Zheng Chenggong or Koxinga (1661-62), and the final conquest by Qing Admiral Shi Lang (1682-1683). His sister, Princess Zhu, persuades him to hold a martial arts contest to find a capable man to appoint as general to oust the Dutch. With the help of the princess, he wins over both lieutenants of notorious pirate Tyrant Bear to turn against their master and Zheng defeats Bear to win the admiration of the imperial court and the people. Having proved his prowess as a leader and a fighter, the general takes command of his father’s ships and troops. He sails across the Taiwan Strait to attack the foreign invaders entrenched in their fortress. It is a long campaign but General Zheng Chenggong prevails over the colonial force, drives the cruel Dutch occupiers of 38 years from the island and returns Taiwan to China under the Ming Emperor in 1662. This is the story of a great man, loyal to his emperor during a turbulent time in China when enemies beset the country from within and without, entrusted with a difficult mission upon which he brings his skills in leadership and tactics to bear, with the help of friends, and through resolute determination, he returns honor to the emperor, his people and to China - a heroic feat etched in history.

The Kaiyuan Hall is a Zheng Chenggong Temple located in Chailin Village, Xikou Township, Chiayi County, Taiwan. There are the world's largest statues of Zheng Chenggong, Gan Hui, and Zhang Wanli. It is dedicated to Zheng Chenggong, the founder of Taiwan, a 53.4-meter-high statue with about 15 floors. The statue was originally enshrined by the Zheng family whose ancestors came from Chailin Village, Quanzhou Prefecture. The temple was built in 1970. The Seating Ceremony was held the next year, and then the construction of the nave and the Yiguandao Xiantian Buddhist Hall were successively completed. With the rapid increase of believers, the original 68-square-meter main hall was not enough due to space constraints, so the management committee asked Lin Yangui to contract the project. In 1982, more than ten skilled workers and about 300 believers cost NT$200. Ten thousand yuan, the main hall will be raised by one foot, and a floor space will be freed up for the lecture hall. On December 9, 1995, the Zheng Chenggong Statue and Cultural Relics Memorial Hall held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on 1, costing 150 million. This colossus was designed by Lin Zengtong, who won the Legacy Award. Although the temple built the tallest statue of Zheng Chenggong in the world, it was limited by funds and could not be equipped with Zhang Wanli and Gan Hui at the same time. Later, a Japanese female entrepreneur provided 10 million funding. On March 15, 2000, the temple ground was broken for the Fusong Nursing Center named after Zheng Chenggong's childhood name as a nursing home. In 2003, Fusong Conservation Center was completed and Zheng Chenggong Memorial Park was built. On December 11, 2015, the successful sword was completed. It is four or two feet long and can be put in and out of the sheath. On November 20, 2016, the temple held the autumn ceremony of the Zheng Chenggong Federation and the inauguration ceremony of the two statues of Gan Hui and Zhang Wanli.

In this Part 2 episode, we will look at Dutch and Spanish Formosa and the history of these two would-be colonizers of Taiwan. The Dutch were the first to try and make a serious go at colonizing Taiwan. Zheng Zhilong and his famous son Zheng Chenggong will also be covered in this episode. Zheng Chenggong, better known in the West as Koxinga, is probably the most well-known person in Taiwan's history. He was responsible for removing the Dutch from Taiwan and opening the floodgates to the migration of thousands upon thousands of settlers from the Mainland. He also established the Dongning Kingdom on the island. Taiwan is still not yet part of China. But after Shi Lang is introduced in the next episode, that all changes. - To support the CHP and Teacup Media Join our Patreon: 🤍 Subscribe to CHP Premium: 🤍 Donate at 🤍 Buy a Coffee: 🤍 - Subscribe to The China History Podcast: 🤍 Subscribe to The Tea History Podcast: 🤍 Subscribe to The Chinese Sayings Podcast: 🤍 - For more CHP and Teacup Media content, visit the website: 🤍 - Follow us on: Instagram: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 TikTok: 🤍
