Mat’s got his hands on both of these performance pocket rockets and he’s going to run you through everything you need to know to find out which is best! (Ok, it’s the RS3 saloon rather than the hatchback, but it’s basically the same car…) So let’s have a look at the stats. Starting with the Audi, it’s packing a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbo petrol engine under the bonnet, that’s good for 400hp & 500Nm of torque. It’s equipped with all-wheel drive, and Audi claims it can hit 60mph in just 3.8 seconds. As for the AMG, it’s actually down a cylinder, with a 2-litre 4-cylinder engine housed up front. However, it’s worth noting that this is the most powerful 2-litre 4-cylinder engine in the world, so it can put down 421hp and 500Nm - so it’s more powerful than the Audi! It can also hit 60mph slightly quicker, at 3.7 seconds. In terms of styling, it’s fair to say the Audi is definitely a bit more understated than the AMG. Sure it comes with two huge oval exhaust pipes along with some big air intakes up front, but that’s nothing compared to the AMG’s huge wing and quad exhaust tips! In terms of price, they’re both relatively similar, with the Audi starting at £55,000, and the AMG coming in at £59,000. But which should you choose? There’s only one way to find out - stick with Mat for this all-new group test! They’re both hot hatches (obviously), they both have AWD, and they’re both powered by 2-litre turbocharged petrol engines. However, that’s just about where the similarities end! Starting with the Golf R, it can produce 320hp & 420Nm, while it weighs in at 1,551kg. As for the A45 S, well that can produce 421hp & 500Nm, but it also weighs more than the Golf R, tipping the scales at 1,660kg. However, there’s one key difference between these hot hatches - the price! While the Golf R costs just over £39,000, the A45 S rolls up with a price tag of over £57,000!! So is it worth it? The question is, does BMW’s smallest M car have a chance against the likes of AMG, Audi & Porsche? Well, it’s time to find out! Starting with the Audi, it’s powered by Audi’s glorious 2.5-litre 5 cylinder turbo engine that can produce 400hp and 500Nm of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed automatic gearbox. It weighs in at 1,570kg, and if you’re looking to pick one up it’ll cost you around £54,000. To its right we have the recently revised Mercedes-AMG A45 S. It’s packing a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo under the bonnet that can put down 421hp and 500Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and it tips the scales at 1,550kg. It’s a bit more expensive than the Audi, too, costing around £63,000. On the far side we have the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS. It’s the most expensive car here, coming in at £75,300! What’s more, it’s also the least powerful car here, with the 4-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six producing 400hp and 430Nm. This power is only sent to the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, however, it’s also the lightest car here, coming in at just 1,435kg. Then finally we have the all-new BMW M2. It’s equipped with a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six, and as a result, it’s the most powerful car here, putting down 460hp and 550Nm of torque! Just like the Porsche this power is sent to the rear wheels only via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and a new one today will cost around 1,720kg. However, it’s by far the heaviest car here, tipping the scales at 1,720kg! So how will this one play out - will the weight difference prove decisive? Or will the M2’s extra power push it to victory? It’s time for an incredible tuned hot hatch drag race!! We’ve got our hands on the BMW M240i, VW Golf R, Audi RS3 and AMG A45 S. They’re all about to go head-to-head over the quarter-mile, and they’ve all been tuned! This one’s going to be epic… So let’s check out the stats. The BMW is powered by a 3-litre straight-six turbo, which normally puts out 374hp and 500Nm of torque. However, the one we’ve got our hands on now puts out 460hp and 650Nm! Next up it’s the Golf R, which is the most powerful car here! Its 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine normally produces 374hp and 420Nm of torque, but it’s £7,000 worth of work done to it, and as a result, it now puts down 530hp and 630Nm!! Alongside the Golf, we have the RS3, with the power output from its 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbo increased from 400hp and 500Nm to 503hp and 630Nm respectively. Then finally we have the AMG A45. It’s had the least work done on it here (only £1,000 worth), but it’s still received a pretty tasty output increase, with the 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo now putting down 503hp and 610Nm! Nicholas Neofitou didn't take the easiest route to building a 10 second car. While the A45 AMG was a stonking hot hatch from factory, it never really caught on in the tuning community, even though many saw it's potential. The quarter mile world record for this generation of A45 AMG is currently 10.7 seconds, and this South African special is getting pretty damn close! By his own admission, these are not the easiest cars to modify, especially in South Africa where parts are scarce. However, over the last five years, he has persevered and at altitude is now running the quarter mile in the high 10s. There have been some A45 AMG horror stories with regards to tuning. This is why i am terrified to tune my Mercedes A45 AMG! I have had the A45 AMG for just over 4 months now and i love it. The sounds that now come out of the exhaust under hard acceleration are just incredible. The A45 AMG is a quick car but tuning it will make it quicker... but at what expense? I want to still keep the Mercedes A45 AMG reliable and is tuning it to somewhere in the region of 430bhp too much? or am i just worrying? Let me know! I really love my A45. It’s a giant killer, at a giant killing price. And today, I’ll show you how to upgrade an 45 to make it MORE AMG, by giving showing you some of the best mods doable! I visited it as a customer of #AMG, very sceptical of this new risky direction for AMG, as was everyone. But at 36k it was as fast as the then C63, and it’s hand built motor was the most powerful production 4 cyl in the world, following the one-man one-engine tradition. I test drove it many months later and fell in love: Great engine, #MercedesAMG sound, great steering and gearbox, and mini black series looks. This was a proper AMG! This car also prompted me to start cataloguing my car journey via Instagram with my first ever post, an act that later gave birth to RBR! So it holds a special place. Now the New A45S is a massively capable car, with an even more powerful engine, and speed and agility that could genuinely keep up with a Supercar. But it costs a commensurate amount, at an eye watering 60 thousand pounds. A35 isn’t much cheaper in the 40’s. But for me that takes the fun out of a hot hatch! They’re meant to be giant slayers, at a giant slaying price! SO, when i bought mine a year and a half ago, it was in-spite of the new car. It’s a pre-facelift too, low mileage at 7K in amazing condition, and I bought it for only circa 25k. But the plan was always to take that great base, and make it more AMG, and modern, in every way: and I’m going to show you that today, including the best part, a whole new AMG paint finish! The first thing I did, even before delivery was the wheels. I got the alloys from the new A45S, which changed the entire look of the car bringing it right in line with 2021 cars! Michelin also sent me the PS4S tyres: get them! Amazing performance and longevity. Inside, I also added the AMG specific steering wheel and gear selector that my car wasn’t optioned with. The steering wheel was done in red dinamica from the SLS black series, but you can also get a carbon one from SW Customs, as you’ll see in my upcoming C63 Black Series transformation video. Outside, i wanted a new paint finish and I didn’t like the poxy looking pipes of the original car. AMG and Mercedes don’t give much choice for custom colours, even the GT Black Series doesn’t get any PTS #Paint option. Enter Fastlane Paint and Body, the official Bodyshop for Mercedes Benz World and many other dealers. They’ve started a new PTS, i.e. paint to sample service for ANY car post factory, and to top it off, it’s peelable paint so is totally reversible! I’ve already done my C63 Black Series in Solarbeam yellow with them (video coming in a few weeks), and I chose another VERY AMG colour that we’ve never seen on a compact AMG before.
