Thousands of refugees and migrants are continuing to cross the United States border from Mexico, pushing the city of El Paso in the state of Texas “to a breaking point” and leaving President Joe Biden’s administration scrambling to stem the influx of people. Nearly 9,000 people made the crossing on Saturday, according to officials, marking one of the highest rates of arrivals in recent months. Oscar Leeser, the mayor of El Paso, said more than 2,000 people were seeking asylum in the city per day, up from 350-400 as recently as six weeks ago, straining resources and filling up shelters. Over the past 10 days, the city has worked with the US Border Patrol to provide shelter for 6,500 people, he said. Why Indians are turning to Youtube: There is no media landscape anywhere like India’s – almost 400 television news channels, broadcasting in 20 languages. Indians are also YouTube’s biggest audience - and its fastest-growing - and the platform has become a vital source of news for them. Well-known Indian journalists have abandoned prime-time TV slots in favour of Youtube. They have more freedom online to report on politics and social issues - at least for now. The spectre of censorship is growing, under a government that clamps down on news coverage it doesn’t like. The Listening Post’s Meenakshi Ravi reports on India’s YouTube boom and how - despite the misinformation - it has become a primary source of news.
