Foreign ministers from Arab League member states have agreed to reinstate Syria’s membership after its suspension more than 10 years ago, according to Iraqi state media. The ministers voted for Syria’s return into the fold at the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo on Sunday. The decision was made in advance of the Arab League Summit in Saudi Arabia on May 19 and amid a flurry of regional normalisation of ties with Damascus in recent weeks. Syria’s Arab League membership was revoked after President Bashar al-Assad ordered a crackdown on protesters in March 2011 that spiralled the country into a civil war that has since killed nearly half a million people and displaced another 23 million. Arab leaders have closed their first summit meeting in two years by reiterating the centrality of the Palestinian cause, albeit avoiding to address their own splits over normalising ties with Israel. The final declaration that brought an end to the two days of the Arab League summit in Algiers on Wednesday highlighted the bloc’s continued support for Palestinian statehood, the protection of sites in Jerusalem against Israeli violations and condemnation of Israel’s use of violence and its blockade of Gaza. The 22 member states, however, fell short of taking an open stance against Palestine’s occupying power. Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, reporting from Algiers, said the Arab League had purposefully issued a “carefully crafted” communique. Arab government representatives in Cairo voted Sunday to return Syria to the Arab League after a 12-year suspension, according to the organisation. Due to “dramatic diplomatic shifts” internationally and eased US sanctions after the Turkey-Syria earthquakes, the decision came about quickly. Arab League foreign ministers voted on Sunday to readmit Syria into the organization, after a suspension that lasted over a decade due to the region-wide condemnation of President Bashar Assad's crackdown on the 2011 protests turned civil war. Ministers held a closed meeting at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, where the unfolding situation in Sudan was also on the agenda. Some members did not attend the session on Sunday. The most notable absentee was Qatar, which has backed Syria's opposition against Assad. Meanwhile, Syria said the "positive" move serves Arab interests. "The stage ahead requires an effective and constructive Arab approach at the bilateral and collective levels based on dialogue, mutual respect and common interests of the Arab nation," Syria's state news agency SANA quoted the country's Foreign Ministry as saying. Arab leaders are set to convene in Jeddah on Friday, May 19 for the 32nd Arab League Summit, with Syria taking part for the first time in over a decade. The organisation suspended Damascus in November 2011, following a crackdown on protests and the subsequent civil war that is estimated to have killed hundreds of thousands of people. The Arab League's Secretary General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said decision to readmit Syria was the start of a process to resolve the crisis in the country, which would be 'gradual'. In a statement, Syria's foreign ministry said it had received the League's decision 'with great attention' and called for 'greater Arab co-operation and partnership'. The US and UK, which have recently stated that they will not restore relations with President Bashar al-Assad’s government, have criticised the move. #news #muslim #worldnews

Twelve years ago, the people of Syria rose up against the regime of Bashar al-Assad as the Arab Spring uprisings swept the Middle East. Assad proceeded to kill, bomb, starve, poison and brutalize his people, and does still. He became an international pariah. Foreign ministers from Arab League member states have agreed to reinstate Syria’s membership after 12 years of suspension. The ministers voted for Syria’s return into the fold at the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo on May 7. The move comes amid a flurry of regional normalisation of ties with Damascus in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Russia has welcomed Syria’s “long-awaited, logical” return to the “Arab Family”. How will Syria's reinstatement affect the Arab world and what does it mean for the middle east?
