We've covered cables...so now we're talking about how arches work. Arches are the opposite of cables. So, just as cables work in tension, arches work in compression. A cable pulls in from its supports, so an arch pushes outwards. That's how they both span. Now, you can see the force in a cable represented by the shape of a cable itself. But an arch is rigid so we can't "see" the force in it. What we can do is take the shape of a cable for certain loads and reverse it. That's the direction of compression force in an arch and we can call it a "thrustline". A cable can fail in only one way: breaking. An arch can fail in two ways. It can fail equivalent to a cable i.e. a material crushing failure. Or, it can also buckle. In many ways, tension is stable while compression can be unstable. We see this if we apply an off-center load to an arch. We place that off-center load on a cable, reverse its shape, and we see that the thrustline now leaves the material of the arch itself. The physical result of that is its easy to buckle the arch with the force applied off-center. If you like these videos, then like and subscribe!
Patreon: patreon.com/ConcerningReality FB: facebook.com/ConcerningReality/ The arch bridge and arched structures allowed the Romans to construct buildings with a far greater ratio of wall openings to height than had ever been possible before. The evidence of such architecture is found in not only the Roman Coliseum but also the labyrinth of arched catacombs that lie beneath historic Rome. Focusing in on the arch bridge, it was a technology never seen before, one that allowed boats to pass under walkways and roads and one that enabled the Roman’s famous series of raised aqueducts. Why was the arched bridge so crucial to the roman empire, and what structural properties of the arch have that enabled roman architecture to survive relatively in-tact even to modern times? The park is adjacent to the Colorado River, 4 miles (6 km) north of Moab, Utah. More than 2,000 natural sandstone arches are located in the park, including the well-known Delicate Arch, as well as a variety of unique geological resources and formations. The park contains the highest density of natural arches in the world. The park consists of 76,679 acres (119.811 sq mi; 31,031 ha; 310.31 km2) of high desert located on the Colorado Plateau. The highest elevation in the park is 5,653 feet (1,723 m) at Elephant Butte, and the lowest elevation is 4,085 feet (1,245 m) at the visitor center. The park receives an average of less than 10 inches (250 mm) of rain annually. Administered by the National Park Service, the area was originally named a national monument on April 12, 1929, and was redesignated as a national park on November 12, 1971. The park received more than 1.6 million visitors in 2018. 🤍 🤍

The pharyngeal arches develops by fourth week of embryonic life .The arches are five pairs in number. The arches are separated from the outside by the pharyngeal clefts and from the inside by the pharyngeal pouches. Together the pharyngeal arches, pharyngeal clefts and pharyngeal pouches makes up the Pharyngeal Arch System, and each one of the constituent of the pharyngeal arch System will give rise to different structures of the head and neck. Each pharyngeal arch at its central core is provided with an artery, a nerve and a cartilage. Arches are the opposite of cables. Arches work in compression while cables work in tension. Arches are rigid while cables are flexible. And, for the same loads, the shape of the thrustline within an arch is the same, just inverted, from the shape of a cable. So we can look at thrustlines within arches. They tell us a lot about the behavior of the compression force within the arch. If the thrustline stays within the arch then there are no concerns (here, we’re assuming the arch is made of rigid blocks that can’t carry tension between them). But, if the load is to the side we see how there can be a problem as the thrustline leaves the arch itself. We then go through a range of other loads on an arch and how the internal thrustline changes. Each time, we compare the thrustline to the corresponding shape of a cable. We finish with the concept of arch bridges and that of a tied arch putting tension into the deck so the end supports can be vertical-only. Don’t forget to like and subscribe!
