Southwest China’s largest metropolis and one of its greenest big cities has a population of 21 million. Chengdu exemplifies Beijing’s quest to modernize the country’s vast interior and is the lynchpin of an emerging eco-friendly mega-region in Sichuan province. Subscribe to TDC: 🤍 Scenic mountains ring the fertile basin of Sichuan province, a land known for its agricultural abundance and famous cuisine of chili-infused sauces and spicy hot pot. Its capital has been continuously inhabited for more than 3,000 years, the only major city in China to have an unchanged name and location throughout the imperial, republican, and communist eras–a history that remains remarkably well preserved. In the second century BC, Chengdu was one of Earth’s largest civilizations, with 350,000 inhabitants. In the 11th century, the world’s first widely used paper money was created here. Unfortunately, things turned bleak in the 1500s when its residents were nearly all destroyed by a murderous Mongol invasion. For decades afterward, Chengdu remained so sparsely populated that wild tigers freely roamed its streets. During the Chinese Civil War in 1949, Chengdu was the last stronghold in the country for the forces of Chiang Kai-shek’s Republic of China before their evacuation to Taiwan. In spite of its short-lived status as the capital, the city attracted loyal business people, workers, and academics–an influx of talent that founded many of the industries and institutions that continue to make Chengdu the premiere cultural and economic center of Southwest China. In the year 2000, Beijing launched the “Open Up The West Program” to encourage immigration from its wealthy coastal regions and spread prosperity to its 12 poorest areas in the west. As an established metropolis, Chengdu has been a major winner under the policy. Its population has doubled over the last 25 years while becoming one of China’s most dynamic cities. Between 2010 and 2022 105 highrises over 100 meters were completed, catapulting it to 12th on the list of the world’s tallest metropolises. But high-density construction is happening all across China. What’s special about Chengdu is the amount of land local officials have set aside for parks, paths, and athletic facilities, an effort to make it as livable as possible. President Xi has officially designated it China’s Park City Demonstration Area. Municipal leaders even brought in experts from the United Nations to better understand how ecological development can solve some of Chengdu’s most pressing challenges. One ultimate goal is to create the world’s largest continuous network of paths by 2050 by reserving 500 meters on either side of its largest ring highway, a project that will eventually produce 188 square kilometers of parks. Sichuan is one of the greatest cuisines of China, and the world, known for numbing Sichuan peppercorn, chili oil, layers of fermented and pickled ingredients, and huge amounts of flavor. I was very excited to go on an ultimate Sichuan Chinese street food tour to learn more about this fascinating cuisine. Here’s the main food and restaurants we ate at in this video: ShiEr Qiao Baozi - One of the most common things to eat for breakfast in China is baozi, and this corner little restaurant is extremely popular and their family favorite spot for baozi in Chengdu. The minced pork version, which is their main one, is probably the best baozi I’ve ever had. The meat filling was delicious, but really it was the bread, the dough that stood out. Total price - 24 RMB ($3.38) Duck Blood Snack - One our way to the market, we had another Sichuan street food classic, coagulated duck blood drenched in chili oil. Delicious. Total price - 7 RMB ($0.98) Wang Ma Roast Rabbit - One of the most popular Sichuan Chinese street food snacks is roasted rabbit, shredded and loaded with chili oil, Sichuan peppercorn, and chili oil. What an ultra tasty snack. Half rabbit - 33 RMB ($4.65) Market - The market is vibrant and full of action and energy, and a perfect place to get a feel for the fresh ingredients used in Sichuan food cooking. The highlight for me was tasting fresh Sichuan peppercorn, both green and red versions, which were so pungent it was almost hard to breath from chewing on a few. Luckily, sugar reduces the effect of Sichuan peppercorn, and so we ate a persimmon. What a food experience! Noodles - One of the most well known of all Sichuan Chinese street food dishes are chili noodles, and so Anita brought us to one of her favorite spots. The noodles were cooked perfectly, then tossed in chili oil and herbs, with extra pork meat. They were unbelievably tasty. Price - 12 RMB ($1.69) per bowl Sifang Dumpling Shop - Finally, for the last morning snack before lunch, we ate some Sichuan dumplings, again, one of the most eat street foods of Chengdu. The dumplings were boiled, then seasoned with chili oil, garlic, and sesame seeds. Spanning a total area of 324,000 square metres, the complex covers five floors with spaces spanning 12 metres below ground. At present, it is said to offer more than 1,300 first-tier brands from around the world. Dubbed a “palace-like underground world” by Chinese netizens on the social media platform, the luxury shopping complex SKP Chengdu is divided into four main areas: Chengdu SKP, Chengdu SKP-S, K Avenue and G Avenue. Moreover, it is designed to look like a park, with 33 crafted landscapes and scenic spots with only a few shops visible on the ground floor level. According to a spokesperson from SKP, the complex intends “to challenge every expectation, standard and rule of luxury retailing in terms of craft, quality, innovation, entertainment, engineering and sustainability,” and aims to become “one of the largest and most impressive luxury fashion retail centres in the world”. Standing invisible to the human eye, the company stated it decided to go for a sunken-style mall because it “wished to honour Chengdu’s nature and humanity.” All in all, given Chengdu’s burgeoning luxury market, the Sichuan capital seems like a sound choice for SKP’s third location in China. Looking ahead, SKP owner Beijing Hualian Group aims to open additional locations in Wuhan, Guangzhou, Kunming, Hohhot and Huangzhou. -⭐⭐ What is the meaning of Dujiangyan? -⭐⭐ The place's name, Dujiangyan, meaning "dam on the capital city's river" is a modest title for an undertaking of incredible scope. Dujiangyan Irrigation System is honored as the 'Treasure of Sichuan', which still plays a crucial role in draining off floodwater, irrigating farms and providing water resources for more than 50 cities in the province. In China, Chengdu is always praised as the Tian Fu Zhi Guo, which means 'Nature's Storehouse'. Over 2,200 years ago, the city was threatened by the frequent floods caused by flooding of the Minjiang River (a tributary of the Yangtze River). Li Bing, a local official of Sichuan Province at that time, together with his son, decided to construct an irrigation system on the Minjiang River to prevent flooding. After a lengthy study and a lot of hard work by the local people, the great Dujiangyan Irrigation System was completed. Since then, the Chengdu Plain has been free of flooding and the people have been living peacefully and affluently. Dujiangyan is the oldest and only surviving no-dam irrigation system in the world; and a wonder in the development of Chinese science. The project consists of three important parts, namely Yuzui, Feishayan and Baopingkou scientifically designed to automatically control the water flow of the rivers from the mountains to the plains throughout the year. There is a magnificent bridge called the Anlan Cable Bridge crossing the Minjiang River above Yuzui, which is the most scenic place of the whole project. The construction of the bridge originally commenced before the Song Dynasty (960-1279). At that time, the body of the bridge was constructed with wooden blocks and the handrails were made of bamboo. Recently the wood and bamboo were replaced with steel and reinforced concrete to ensure the security of the visitors. Seen from afar, the bridge looks like a rainbow hanging over the river. From the bridge, you can clearly see the entire layout of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. There are also historical sites here. Fulong Temple is said to be the place where Li Bing subjugated the evil dragon during the construction process. The stone statue of Li Bing caved in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) is displayed in the front courtyard of the temple; is the earliest round sculptured stone statue in China.
