Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a field of study dealing with teaching computers to behave more like humans or other animals, and it’s been around since the 1950s. Machine Learning, on the other hand, is a subset of AI that deals with computer algorithms that learn from experience to get better at a task or function, such as recognizing faces. Collecting user data to predict browsing and shopping habits using machine learning has been helping businesses make huge leaps in marketing growth in the last few years. However, collecting, storing, and managing all that “big data” has proven to be troublesome for some companies. Additionally, the Internet of Things (IoT) is an industry term for connecting non-browser based and non-backbone computing devices to the Internet. While it might not be apparent in our lives as consumers, it has helped industry by being able to automate the monitoring of expensive equipment and track assets as they move about the world. Edge AI is a somewhat new term that combines these concepts. Instead of moving tons of raw data to a remote server, locally networked computers and embedded devices can utilize machine learning techniques to help alleviate some of the stress of network traffic. As data volumes, both data that exists and the rate at which new data is generated, continue to grow, and as our desire to make more agile and quicker data-driven decisions strengthens, the potential of Edge Computing becomes more and more relevant. The world, specifically the “things”, around us emit potentially infinite data points which we are likely just scraping the surface of possibilities on how to utilize. Whether gauges in an office space measuring temperature and movement in the room or equipment in a manufacturing facility or the ball and athletes in our favorite sporting event – everything offers data with the obvious challenge being the acquisition, interpretation, storage, analysis, and initiation of action of that data. The general idea of Edge Computing, with a subset capability being Edge AI, is that the latency, costs, and feasibility of transferring data from Edge Hardware (such as IoT devices) to a central area for processing and storage limits the speed and effectiveness of using that data. So, why can’t we collect, store, analyze, and apply algorithms to that data using the Edge Hardware itself outside of one’s main network? In this recorded webcast Thorogood Data and Analytics consultant Ben Dunmire illustrates that the prospect of Edge Computing offers an interesting proposition given reduced latency, higher speeds and agility, reduced dependence on bandwidth, and scalability.

At Embedded World 2023, Arrow Electronics announced a collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies to accelerate ecosystem adoption of edge AI solutions. This collaboration and the new Edge Labs Center of Excellence will help AI innovators navigate development challenges and advance their software capabilities. The first product from the Edge Labs initiative, the Aikri 42x, was also demonstrated at the show. Barrie Mullins, Vice President of Solutions at eInfochips, an Arrow Technologies company, explained how the collaboration will allow them to bring system on modules to market faster as the engineers increase their Qualcomm Technologies expertise. This will impact a wide range of applications, ranging from healthcare and robotics to cameras, displays, and optical inspection tools. Along with a dedicated engineering team, Edge Labs will be home to solutions architects and design services to further shorten the time to market for customers. Combining Qualcomm’s innovative products with Arrow’s engineering and supply chain expertise will help customers capitalize on the opportunities of edge AI and bring innovative solutions to a more diverse and global customer base. By addressing the challenges of edge AI adoption, including lack of prior experience, supply chain complexity, and lack of access to high-performance chipsets, Edge Labs will help the tech market embrace and implement the new technology. In this tutorial series, Shawn builds an artificial intelligence on the edge (Edge AI) project from beginning to end by collecting data, performing feature extraction, training several machine learning models, and deploying to an edge device (single board computer, microcontroller). Such an anomaly detection system could be useful for predicting faults in equipment as part of an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) ecosystem. In the first part, we create an Arduino sketch for an ESP32 to collect raw data from a 3-axis accelerometer and pipe that data to a custom Python server. The server saves each 200-point sample as a separate file. Code and example dataset for this video series can be found here: 🤍 Anomaly detection is an important area of focus in engineering, as it can be used to save lives and save potentially millions of dollars in costly repairs of machines, industrial equipment, robots, and so on. It also sees wide use in fraud prevention and network traffic analysis. For this series, we want to focus on using anomaly detection to predict problems in machinery before they occur. An important step in any machine learning project is data collection. We need to collect a lot of data to train models. You can find pre-made datasets (such as the NASA PCoE datasets: 🤍 but nothing beats collecting your own if you wish to make a model that best represents your system. In the video, we specifically look at using the ESP32 as an Internet of Things (IoT) node to perform data collection for us. Data is sent to a custom server running on our computer. Note that this is all accomplished on a local network but could be expanded to run on the Internet. The server collects and sorts the files for use in training on the next episode.
