The traditional wooden teahouses and merchant shops (machine) contribute to the charming "old Japan" feeling that's so prevalent as you walk around Gion's streets and narrow alley-ways. HOW TO GET THERE: If you’re coming from Kyoto station, you could take the 206 bus and get off in front of the Yasaka Shrine. You could also take the subway to Sanjo, but you'll need to walk a further 10 or 15 minutes. Gion-Shijo is the closest train station. This is on the Keihan line, so you might have to transfer from the subway. In this video, you will explore Gion district in Kyoto, Japan. Gion is a geisha district and it is the most famous entertainment district in Japan. You will explore Gion with me as I walk through the streets of Kyoto’s geisha district starting from Yasaka Shrine (Gion Shrine) through Shijo-dori and Hanamikoji Street. At the end of Hanami-koji street, I visited Kenninji Temple and then walked through the historic streets of Gion and ended my walk in an area called Shirakawa to enjoy the view from Gion Tatsumi Bridge, which is just a few steps away from Tatsumi Daimyojin Shrine. I had lunch at Gion Kirara Restaurant. The setting is very Japanese with a choice of seating at the counter or Tatami. It is a wonderful place to enjoy authentic Kyoto food. Gion houses two hanamachi, or geisha districts: Gion Kobu (祇園甲部) and Gion Higashi (祇園東). The two were originally the same district but split many years ago. Gion Kobu is larger, occupying most of the district including the famous street Hanamikoji, while Gion Higashi is smaller and occupies the northeast corner, centered on its rehearsal hall. Throughout the popular Gion Festival period in July there are various rituals and forms of entertainment put on all over Kyoto for those who came to see the festival to enjoy and participate in. Folk dances performed by local children, action-packed kagura plays, dynamic drum concerts, and graceful dances by apprentice geisha are only a few of the many performances on stage and in the streets throughout the month. For those who want to watch or participate there are colorful parades and a summer purification ritual as well. Our team stopped by the Omukae Chōchin ritual, the Hanagasa Junkō parade, the Kankōsai portable shrine journey, and the Eki Jinja purification ritual in order to capture the sights and sounds of this famous festival month. Gion Matsuri is the most famous festival of Japan. It takes place in Kyoto throughout the month of July. Gion Matsuri is celebrated to honor the protection of Kyoto from a deadly disease that spread across the region in the 9th century. Initially, a religious ritual was performed to pray for good health and for the gods to protect the population from the epidemic.
