🎟️ Subscribe! 🤍 "A poor craftsman blames his tool." Gosh, I love that statement. The simpler the tool the less there is to blame, and few tools are simpler than a hand saw. While hand saws come in many varieties this post will focus on the western hand saw; however, many of the principles are the same for other hand saws. The key to getting a straight and accurate cut with a hand saw is practicing the proper technique. Lets jump into it with out any further introduction. Proper stance If you are right-handed you should stand with your left foot forward and your right foot back, knees slightly bent. This similar to a karate stance and will allow you to engage your full body in the work of cutting. Simply reverse the stance if you’re left-handed Gripping the saw The saw is gripped with the forefinger pointing forward towards the spine of the saw along the handle with the thumb wrapping around the handle to the opposite side and mimicking the pointer finger. The thumb and forefinger function as stabilizers locking the saw into the arm, thereby keeping the saw from moving left and right with out the wrist bending. The remaining three fingers grip the handle with a gentle yet firm  grip think of it as if you are holding a baby bird in your hand, you don't want it to get away but you don't want to crush it. If your knuckles are white then you run the risk of crushing the bird like Lennie Small would.   Correct sawing motion When we cut with the saw we want the forearm and the saw to move back and forth in a line without any lateral movement. Do this by articulating at the shoulder and the elbow with your arm close to the body. If your elbow moves away from your body like you are doing the chicken dance then you are doing it all wrong.  Thumb help Lining up a cut and keeping the saw there as you start the cut is much easier when you employ a little help from the thumb on your free hand. The thumb should be used to line up the saw with the cut line and keep it there as a cut starts. First position the saw close to the cut line by hand and then place your thumb on the work piece where it can press on the side of the saw, to adjust the the cut line simply rock your thumb forward and back to move the saw. You thumb will keep the saw from wandering as you start your cut by acting as a guide, it will be safe there so long as you keep it on the side of the saw and not under it.  Starting the Cut Position the work piece so that the side or face that is being cut is facing up and securely in place. A cut is best started on the far edge of the work piece (as opposed to across face or side) because it will require the minimum physical effort needed start a straight groove for the saw to ride in. The starting strokes work better with less pressure, I like to draw the saw back before my first cutting push when working with a western saw as it will create a micro groove that aids the saw on its first push. With a small groove established on the far edge you can work the saw forward and back to draw out the groove across the work piece to the near edge. Once the groove is established across the work piece you can relieve your helping thumb from its duties as a guide and level out the saw before continuing the cut. Tips Use the correct saw for your cut. A crosscut saw is used to cut across the grain and a rip saw is for cutting with the grain of the wood. If you need to a rip saw can be used to cross cut but a crosscut saw should not be used to rip cut. 📷 Instagram 🤍 ⚠️Warning: Woodworking can be potentially life threatening. After making 2 other magnetic handsaw cutting guides, in this video, I will show you how to make the BEST guide for your hand saw! Watch till the end for extra tips and uses you probably won't expect!! 🔥 Want to make your own?! LINKS FOR TOOLS AND MATERIALS USED► 🤍 🔴Subscribe to get updated when I upload new videos!► 🤍 This is actually my 3rd time making a magnetic cutting guide for my Japanese saw. My first Japanese saw guide was a simple magnet that was glued to a piece of wood, and using it to cut wood was very uncomfortable because I could never place it at 90 degrees properly... My second guide was similar to this one, except that it was mounted straight to my workbench, making it not portable and making it take up more space. The plywood face was also smaller. It also got damaged from the elements since my workbench is outdoors. This guide is better BY FAR, it's perfect! I've used it probably about 20 times since building it and it guides the saw perfectly, especially a Japanese saw that leaves an incredibly clean cut quality, even on a hardwood like European Beech! This magnetic guide is way better than any hardware store miter box you can buy, it's faster, more accurate, doesn't require a special saw, takes up less valuable workshop space, and should last forever - a great woodworking project for a beginner! #beginnerwoodworkingprojects #Japanesesaw Are you working safely?► 🤍 You can make videos just like this one! Newer video can be found here: 🤍 How To Sharpen A Crosscut Hand Saw This is the same saw that I restored in this video 🤍 Sharpening a cross cut saw is fairly simple and can be a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. you will need a triangular saw file and a standard flat file. To sharpen a crosscut saw start by jointing the teeth to bring them all down to the same level. keep the file at 90 degrees to the plate of the saw. Next use the saw File to cut in the teeth. I like to use 30 degrees but some like as little as 10. I will soon have a video talking about the difference between cross cut and rip cut saws, but if you can sharpen a crosscut saw you can sharpen a rip saw. Lumber Jocks 🤍 Instagram 🤍

Freehand CIRCULAR SAW CUTTING...Pro Tips, Tricks and Secrets! I've been asked a lot of times how I cut straight with a circular saw WITHOUT using a guide or fence. In this short video, I'll explain some techniques that will help anyone cut straight with a circular saw freehand! PLEASE NOTE: Circular saws are dangerous. This is just an instructional video. If you attempt to use a circular saw, you do so at your own risk. Please follow all safety instructions as they are described in the manufacturer's guidelines for your saw. And please be careful! Here are the keys to cutting straight freehand with a circular saw: 1. Make sure you're cutting on a stable surface. 2. Establish a cut lineI create mine using a steel straight edge. 3. Spend time on your initial line-upyou want the blade of the circular saw to be in line with the cut path BEFORE you start cutting. 4. Keep both hands on the saw at initial startup. Let the saw spin all the way up before contacting the wood. 5. Proceed very slowly in the beginningattempt to split the cut line in half up the center. 6. Try to get the full length of the blade into the material on the cut line. At this point, cutting with a circular saw becomes more stable because much of the blade is encased in the wood (the blade is sitting in the kerf that it has made). The circular saw wants to cut in a straight line. Don't let it veer too far off course! Only make small micro-corrections to keep it on track, and try to keep it moving. When you're about a foot into the board, you can consider taking your free hand off the pommel and putting it on the board you're cutting to support it. Don't back up too much! This can cause gouges at the front and back of the cut. If you have to stop cutting, let the circular saw wind all the way down, and don't budge it. Before you start up again, let the saw spin all the way up to full speed, then try to get right back onto your same cut line. To finish, pass the blade all the way through the board, then lift it away before the sole plate falls off the far edge. As always, BE EXTREMELY SAFE WHEN USING CIRCULAR SAWS. Again, this is just an instructional video. Don't use a saw without supervision if you're new to carpentry and woodworking. BE SAFE!! THANKS FOR WATCHING! The Honest Carpenter

A hand saw guide that uses a magnetic sheet, but it's not a jig that can cut anything. It's made to accurately and cleanly cut 1x materials and thin materials that are often used. You can cut straight even for the first time. Attach a stop block to the guide so that multiple sheets can be cut to the same length. It is a must function for furniture production. And I made it possible to use the saw guide in the vertical position. There are two advantages of this, one is that you can cut thin materials cleanly and accurately, and the other is that you can fine-tune and modify the length with a plane. If the material is precisely cut to size, it will be very easy to design and make jigs. This time I made a saw guide that can cut up to 1x6, but I will also make a guide for thicker materials such as 2x materials. By designing the guide differently depending on the thickness of the material, I think the accuracy will increase and it will be easier to use. Even DIYers who don't use a circular saw can expand their possibilities if they can achieve cutting accuracy. You can see how this hand saw guide perform in another video. 8 ESSENTIAL Circular Saw Tips for the Beginner.

8 Essential Circular Saw Tips for the Beginner. Circular saws can be an intimidating tool to use for those not used to using one, and for good reason, they can do a lot of damage in the blink of an eyelid. My recommendation is to just take your time, make sure that your surroundings are free of clutter and secure your pieces that you are cutting with a clamp to minimise potential injuries. With that, in today's video l just want to brush up on the basics so that your experience using the circular saw is an efficient, enjoyable and safe one. That way you’ll be able to build anything from an outdoor sofa or even a little step stool to an actual house, safer and quicker. The two popular circular saw sizes are the 7 ¼” and 9 ¼” models. For most of us, the 7 ¼” saw is the perfect size capable of performing most cutting tasks whilst the 9 ¼” model is more for the professional contractor. As far as blades go, the 24 tooth model is a more rugged blade and is for faster cuts that is suited to jobs like construction or landscaping. The 40 to 60 tooth model is for work where the finish cut needs to be of a higher standard such as doing trim carpentry or cutting plywood. Having said that, both models fresh out of the packet create a pretty nice finish. Hope you enjoy and find the video useful. Let me know what you think 👍😁🇦🇺 Before l go on...
