Combat Durian is a reputable durian dealer in Singapore, where you’ll find amazing Musang King durians. Get more details on my Singapore food guide: 🤍 Compared to other foods I ate in Singapore, durian is a little bit different… it’s the only all natural, uncooked, and unprepared, right off the tree delicacy I had. The reason I had to include durian on my must eat list of foods is not only because it’s the King of Fruit and such an amazing natural creation, but also because I’m a bit addicted to durian and I can’t resist any opportunity to eat it. Combat Durian - Known as Combat Durian because they want you to “come back,” or rather after eating one of their durians you’ll want to come back immediately - or just sleep for a little while and wake up and eat another durian. I showed up in the mid-afternoon, and the durian was all on display and ready to be sold. One of the varieties of durian that Combat is most well known for is Musang King, which in Chinese is called Mao Shan Wang, and in English is called Cat Mountain King. The type of durian is originally from Malaysia, and even the durians sold at Combat are grown in Malaysia on the private farm of the owner of the shop. Ying and I chose a nice almost 2 kilo durian, which cost me a total of $32 SGD, which is very expensive for a fruit, but after eating it, I can tell you it was definitely worth every dollar. After choosing our fruit and cutting it up, we took a seat at one of the red tables and began to feast. The lumps of the Musang King durian were very yellow, like butter, and had a waxy shiny skin on each piece. The fruit was perfectly ripe, and it was one of the creamiest things I’ve ever had in my life - like whipped cream, sweet like honey, and with a tinge of a bitterness to contrast it all. It was indeed probably the best durian I’ve ever had in my life. Ying and I sat there in almost near silence, apart from lots of groaning, and finishing off our Mao Shan Wang. The final bite was a little bitter sweet, knowing it was the end, but knowing that I had just consumed one of the best durians I had ever eaten in my life. Musang King (猫山王) and Black Thorn (黑刺) are popular durian varieties with premium price. We have decided to compare and taste them side by side. Adding on to the comparison is D2, a variety that we found good in the past. We have assessed the durians on Quantitative and Qualitative aspects. QUANTITATIVE ASPECTS The D2 has the smallest seeds, weighted averagely 11.2g compared to Musang King 15.2g and Black Thorn 14.3g. So, D2 won in this aspect. We were particularly interested in how much pulp each variant contains, in relation to the fruit weight. Musang King emerged as winner here with 35% of the fruit weight contributed by its pulp, excluding the seeds, followed by Black Thorn at 33%. D2 is the looser with its pulp making only 22% of its weight. This is probably a bit biased because in this case, the Musang King is a bigger fruit. This observation provides a correlation between fruit size and pulp content, and we can use this as a guide to assess fruit size and pricing by the retailer. If the price per kilogram between bigger fruit and smaller fruit of the same variant is too large, it may be worthwhile to buy the smaller fruit, and vice versa. QUALITATIVE ASPECTS Each of us have our own preference. Both Musang King and Black Thorn tasted very good with very creamy texture and reasonable seed size. However, those who prefer stronger taste may find Musang King more appealing. KC prefers the Musang King over Black Thorn due to Musang King's more intense taste, and the fact that it is cheaper than Black Thorn. Faith likes bitter taste durians regardless of any variety. In this case, the Black Thorn seem to satisfy her more because it is more balance in all aspects, with a little bitterness (alcoholic taste) and with the level of sweetness that she likes. We finally tried Malaysian durian! Including the famous Musang King, claimed to be the BEST durian in the world! We didn't know there were so many types of durian in Malaysia! So we went to SS2 in Petaling Jaya which is not far from Kuala Lumpur. There must have been 10 or more durian shops around the area! We settled at the SS2 Durian House shop, and bought some kampung durian (D13 and Kang Hai) at RM2 per piece and the Black Gold Musang King (from Pahang) at RM48/kg. We came to the east to look for cheap and nice Mao Shan Wang(Musang King). Saw a facebook post on Louis Durian selling MSW at $8 a fruit and was so excited. We came down to the shop and brought 4 MSW at SGD$8 each, tried 3 for $10 Kampong Durian and the cheapest $2 kampong durian. Then came their competitor selling MSW at $5 per fruit. Hence we brought 4 more MSW and went home with 12 durians in total.
