✅ C'mon over to 🤍 where you can learn PLC programming faster and easier than you ever thought possible! ✅ Check out the full blog post over at 🤍 Today we are going to talk about the basics of a PLC, the workhorse of industrial automation. The programmable logic controller, or PLC, is a special purpose computer. It has no display, no keyboard, no printer, no hard drive, and hides in the control panel out on the factory floor, but it is still a computer. Initially, the PLC was a replacement for panels of relays, devices that turn on and off. Making a machine run using relays as logic was time-consuming and challenging, and making a change in the logic or the operation of the machine was almost as complicated as starting over. ▶ C'mon over to 🤍 where you can learn PLC programming faster and easier than you ever thought possible! = ▶ Check out the full blog post over at 🤍 = In this video, we’re going to introduce you to a typical PLC and its associated hardware. First of all, let’s start with the term PLC, and talk about what it means. PLC is short for Programmable Logic Controller. A PLC consists of a computer with several additional hardware pieces that are a part of it or can be attached to it at any time. Before we go any further, this is probably a good place to discuss how and where a PLC has been included physically into industrial applications and what it has replaced. In industrial applications today, much of the Motor Starter circuitry is replaced by a PLC. Interestingly, many of the original physical devices are connected to the PLC! The Start and Stop switches, the OL (overload) contacts, and the M relay are hardwired to hardware modules that are part of the PLC. Alright, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s look at what we mean by the term PLC Hardware. The Hardware components of a PLC include the following: Processor, Power Supply, Input/Output Modules, and a Programming Device. Let’s look at each piece of hardware, or module one at a time. The Power Supply is connected to AC mains for the supply voltage. The Power Supply output is a DC voltage used to power all of the other modules associated with the PLC. The Power supply DOES NOT provide power for field devices. The input/output modules are connected to digital or analog field devices. Input field devices include switches, encoders, and transmitters for example. Typical output field devices are relays, lamps, and proportional valves. The Processor consists of the CPU (central processing unit) and memory. The processor section makes decisions needed to observe and operate the field devices connected to the Input/Output modules. The decisions are based upon a user-created program saved in the memory. The memory also stores data representing the condition of all input field devices and contains the data telling the output field devices what to do. The Programming Device in today’s industrial applications is usually a laptop or a desktop computer that facilitates the creation of decision-making programs destined for the PLC. Examples of the programming software residing on the laptop are Studio 5000 for Allen Bradley PLCs (from 🤍RockwellautomationInc ) or SIMATIC Step 7 for 🤍SiemensKnowledgeHub PLC’s. = You might want to review one of our other articles: PLC Basics | Programmable Logic Controller 🤍 = Missed our most recent videos? ✅ C'mon over to 🤍 where you can learn PLC programming faster and easier than you ever thought possible! PLC Programming Tutorial for Beginners_ Part-2 🤍 In this lesson we will learn how to write a PLC program using an "S7 300” PLC and “STEP 7” software. We have two pumps which are being used to transfer two separate liquids into this tank.Inside the tank there are two level switches installed in the lower and upper parts of the tank respectively. There is also an electrically powered mixer inside the tank which starts working for a defined period of time, mixing the two liquids together after the tank has filled. We also have a discharge valve in the bottom of the tank which controls the draining of the liquid from the tank. When the level of the liquid drops to the level of the switch's position the contact closes, sending a 24 volt DC signal to the PLC input. We want to write the program so that when the level of the liquid reaches this minimum, the pumps will be activated and begin filling the tank with the liquids. The pumps continue filling the tank until the level reaches its maximum at the higher level switch. When this happens the open contacts in the switch will be closed and another 24-volt signal will be sent to the PLC input telling us that the tank is full. When this signal has been sent, first the pumps should shut down so that no more liquid enters the tank, and then this mixer should be turned on. We want the mixer to operate for seven seconds, mixing the liquids that have been pumped into the tank. After seven seconds the mixer should automatically shut down and this discharge valve should open. With the valve open the liquid will be discharged from the tank and transferred to another location within the factory to be processed. When the level of the liquid in the tank drops to the minimum set level of the lower switch, the switch contacts will close again thus starting a repeat of the cycle! ▶ Engineer's best friend for learning: 🤍 ▶ You can read the full post here: 🤍 ⌚Timestamps: 00:00 - Intro 00:22 - Understanding PLC Components 02:00 - Basic Tips for PLC Troubleshooting 04:32 - Advanced PLC Troubleshooting Techniques 06:12 - Conclusion = PLCs are essential components in modern control systems. Understanding the basic components of a PLC is crucial when it comes to troubleshooting and maintaining these systems. In this video, we will review the fundamental components of a PLC and explore some basic and advanced troubleshooting techniques. - CPU is the brain of the PLC and is responsible for processing the logic and making output decisions based on the inputs received. The processor executes the code stored in memory and controls the operation of the I/O modules. - The power supply provides the necessary voltage and current to power the PLC and its components. Without a stable and reliable power supply, the PLC would not function correctly and can experience errors, faults, or even complete failure. - I/O modules are responsible for communicating with the external devices in a control system. Input modules receive signals from sensors and output modules receive signals from the processor and convert them into signals that can control devices. - Communication modules enable the PLC to communicate with other devices such as other PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, or other relevant devices. These modules typically use protocols such as Ethernet or Modbus to exchange data with other devices. To effectively troubleshoot, start by gathering as much information as possible. Pinpoint the problem by identifying a specific system or component. Troubleshoot by using trial and error methods and recording the outcome of each alteration. Once a solution is proposed, be cautious when implementing changes and consider adverse effects. Verify and test the solution, then take careful notes and notify appropriate individuals to prevent future issues. During this process, it is crucial to use resources such as official vendor documentation, operation and maintenance manuals, and functional design specifications. Online resources can provide helpful tips and solutions from other professionals who have encountered similar issues. It is common to experience issues with wiring in a control system. You'll want to check for correct wiring throughout your PLC and control system. You’ll also want to pay close attention to the main PLC components. Verify that your power supply is working properly, your I/O modules are wired correctly and that they have been configured properly in your programming software, and that all PLC communication is wired up right and configured correctly. Examine the program logic. This means looking at the ladder logic, function blocks, or structured text in your PLC program to see if there are any errors or issues. By carefully monitoring the system, you can detect patterns that can reveal issues to help you toward a solution during troubleshooting. This can be done through a variety of tools such as trending, alarms, and event logs. System audit involves reviewing the system's design and configuration by examining the system's documentation, checking wiring and cable connections, verifying settings on devices, and diving into the nitty gritty details of the PLC program. PID loop tuning is another technique that can be used to optimize the performance of a control system. PLC program debugging is also a useful tool when working with more complicated PLC code. Program debugging is a methodical approach to problem-solving and often involves taking steps through the code to pinpoint where errors are occurring. = Looking to deepen your understanding of PLC troubleshooting? We will explain what PLC timers are, how they work, the different types of timers, and give some examples of how they are used. PLC timers are internal PLC instructions that can be used to delay input and output signals in the PLC program. These timers operate like relay timers but you cannot hold a PLC timer in your hand and they do not need to be connected to wires to operate. There are three main types of PLC timers: – the on-delay timer, – the off-delay timer, – the retentive on-delay timer. All of these PLC timers have a timer file name, a preset value, an accumulated value, a timer enabled bit, a timer timing bit, and a timer done bit. - The timer file name is a PLC tag. This tag is where you can find the timer’s preset and accumulated values and the timer enabled, timing, and done bits. Some PLCs create the timer file name for you and other PLCs have you create the timer file name. For all of my timer examples, I will use the timer file name Timer1. I will also use a selector switch to enable and disable the timers. - The timer preset value is the number that shows the delay length of the timer. This number can be changed by just typing it in or you can have the PLC write a number into this value. This number does not change during the timer’s normal operation. - The timer accumulated value is the number that shows how long the timer has been timing. The timer accumulated value does not function the same on all of these timers. - The timer enabled bit will be on when the timer is enabled. - The timer timing bit will be on when the timer is timing. - The timer done bit does not function the same on all of these timers. I will be using Studio 5000, which is the PLC programming software for Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLCs. But the things you will learn here in these examples can be applied to any other PLC software. Because the overall timer functions are pretty much the same for any other PLC brand. Let’s start by placing a new on-delay timer instruction on a PLC rung with a selector switch input. Type the timer file name Timer1. Next, enter the timer preset so that it equals ten seconds. Not all PLC timers use the same time base, some have time bases that cannot be changed while others will give you multiple time base options. I will discuss what happens to the PLC on-delay timer, off-delay timer, and retentive on-delay timer when the selector switch gets turned on and off. Setting up an off-delay timer is the same as an on-delay timer. Retentive on-delay timers are a lot like on-delay timers. The only major difference with retentive on-delay timers is how the timer accumulated value acts when you turn the selector switch on and off and that it needs a reset bit. Timer applications: 1) On-delay timer On-delay timers are used a lot in PLC programs and in many different ways. For example, an on-delay timer can be used on a conveyor’s start button. The timer could be set up so that the start button would need to be pushed and held for five seconds before the conveyor would start. Another on-delay timer could also be set up to sound a conveyor start-up warning horn and light. 2) Off-delay timer Off-delay timers are used when you need something to stay running longer than everything else. For example, cooling fans and pumps might continue to run after a machine pauses from doing work. 3) Retentive on-delay timer Retentive on-delay timers can be used to track the runtime of equipment. They can be set up to trigger an indicator light to let someone know the equipment has run long enough and requires maintenance to inspect and clean it. = Missed our most recent videos? ✅ C'mon over to 🤍 where you can learn PLC programming faster and easier than you ever thought possible! ✅ Check out the full blog post over at 🤍 In this video, we are going to be talking about analog inputs to the PLC. What do we mean by analog input? Analog values are continuous values, such as temperatures and pressures. While we tend to think of them in digital terms, at some point we have to convert them from the continuous world into our digital world, and this is where analog inputs come in. Voltage signals in the range of plus or minus 20 volts or so and current signals in milliamps are commonly used as both analog inputs to PLCs. Every PLC manufacturer has I/O modules to deal with these kinds of signals, along with other, more specialized modules. Missed our most recent videos?

What's the difference between #PLC #SCADA & #DCS? A PLC, Programmable Logic Controller, reads inputs, executes logic, and writes to outputs. A SCADA, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition connects to a group of PLC's and provides remote monitoring, control, and alarming. A DCS, distributed control system, has both SCADA and PLC functionality. The PLCs are sometimes called RIO or RTU units often run proprietary or application-specific code, such as a rolling mill DCS. SCADA can then connect to a DCS using drivers such as Kepware Technologies to integrate the DCS system with other applications across your plant/enterprise. Hope this answers your question!
