Champford can solo dungeons and Nightmare Campaign especially when in immortal sets. Do not feed him I repeat do not feed him it's a huge mistake.

As a F2P shards are not your problem. That book was easily worth it. You already have too many champs who you want to/can 6 star. Problem with leggos so early on is the potions and the books. You gonna spend loads of energy getting those big pots and they wont bring you their full potential without the books. I would say its better to focus epics before.
Also have you cosidered just getting common 5 star lifesteal gear on your brago? i think he would survive much longer against the clan boss. I might be wrong about that tho

Just because you have a legendary, or 3, does not mean you are not free to play. Keep the legendaries, the struggle to get them leveled up and functional is still there.
