The rite of Installation and Blessing of Sister Anne Clarke OSB as Abbess of Malling Abbey, extracted from the full Eucharistic liturgy celebrated on 4th November 2020. Celebrant: The Rt. Revd. Laurie Green, Visitor of the community, assisted by Cn. Alan Vousden. A film of the whole liturgy is also available on this channel. The service booklet is available for download from the Malling Abbey website. Covid security: This liturgy was celebrated in the midst of the Covid pandemic and much consideration was given as to how it could be done safely. Both Sister Anne and Bishop Laurie had been isolating before the ceremony so it was decided that they did not need to wear masks when in close proximity. The community live as a single household and were providing the choir, so remained unmasked. The guests were masked and socially distanced from one another and from the community and celebrants.

Master Miao Jing has studied Mahayana Buddhism for decades and had her ordination under Mahayana tradition. In 2011, Master Miao Jing began her study of Vajrayana Buddhism under the teaching of Guru H.H. the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the Headmaster of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. Ven. Master Miao Jing is one of the very few Bhikkhunis who practices both Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism and integrates them into her Dharma teachings in the West. For the past few years, she has been a proponent of H.H. 17th Karmapa’s vision to restore the ordination of Bhikkhuni’s precepts in Vajrayana activities and in 2018 she hosted an 1st International Buddhist Bhikkhuni Forum in Canada to further this cause.

The Abbess is a beautiful melody composed by the brilliant folk musician and composer Andy Cutting. He is an extraordinary melodeon player and in addition to touring on his own, he regularly features in top folk line-ups for other notable performers. I first heard this melody when we watched him live at the Terry O’Toole Theatre in Lincoln. I subsequently bought his album and fell in love with this tune. I have tried to record it with the simplicity that the melody deserves, with a simple guitar accompaniment and some light-touch tambourine rhythms. As I don’t play the melodeon myself, I recorded the melody using a flute sound on a digital piano. In order to get the harmony tones that can be generated on a melodeon with the bass keys, I added a simple viola part to the recording.
