Today, Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant has some tips about vises. No, not vices like those you might get into on a wild Saturday night, but the kind of vise you use on your workbench to secure gun parts while you work on them. How you position a part in the jaws of a vise has a big effect on how securely it's retained AND how effectively the other tools you're using will do their jobs. Caleb's Case in Point: There's a right way to position a pistol slide in a vise so you can tap out the sights with a hammer and punch. You want to position the part so the area you're working on is as close to the center of the jaws as possible. You don't want the energy you're applying to the other tools to be dissipated by the work piece flexing or moving slightly in the vise. This may seem simple and obvious, but a lot of folks get in trouble by using their gun vise incorrectly - which is kind of a vice, isn't it? Caleb's Rule of Gun Vises: Work smarter, not harder!
Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant tells us about his new favorite vice... wait, his new favorite gun VISE, the Real Avid Master Gun Vise. This vise is constructed entirely of heavy steel, except for the knobs and padded jaws. Real Avid even thoughtfully includes lag bolts for mounting it to your workbench. But the Big News is the swiveling ball mount that lets you angle the vise any way you need it to get good access to the part of the gun you're working on. What if you need the vise head to stay rock steady while you torque off a stubborn barrel nut or something? Insert the locking pin to lock down the vise in the upright position, and it's as solid as any traditional vise. The vise jaws are reversible, so you can use the padded side or the (still non-scratching) hard polymer side. For really heavy-duty jobs, you can use the underlying steel vise jaws. There's more! Another knob on the Master Gun Vise lets you gently tilt the vise jaws, so for example, if you're boresighting a rifle, you can precisely level up the gun before you mount the scope.

Is the Real Avid Master Gun Vise up to the name of "Master"? Honestly, I had my concerns about torquing a barrel with this vise, until I got my hands on it. I got to play with the Real Avid Master Vise for the first time in January at SHOT Show. I liked it but I couldn't see if it could actually torque a barrel on it.
