I recently completed a 14’ by 18’ greenhouse for Bell Urban Farm in Conway, AR. Kim and her team will be using it to start plants, grow micro greens, and, when rainy, as shelter for arranging bouquets. We helped Josh's wife make a DIY Greenhouse with help from Lowe's. This way, she can keep her plants alive during the winter months and incubate some new plants so they're ready for the spring. Josh began the design with a 3d model in Fusion 360. We got our bill of materials and the cut list then headed to our local Lowe's to get the supplies to begin framing the structure. I chose to use pressure treated lumber for this exterior addition to resist the moisture and humidity that may build up inside the greenhouse. Using Josh's measurements, we nailed together the floor and added the front and back wall studs. Before adding a structure to your yard, you may chose to grate and level the area beforehand. Josh didn't want to tear up the yard, and here in Kentucky, the clay is super hard. In lieu of digging into the ground to level it, we chose to level the floor frame by adding 2x4 posts semi-driven into the ground. This way, Josh and i could level the floor and nail it to those posts along the span of the greenhouse. Now that we had a level surface to work from, we continued to build out the frame by connecting the front and back studs and then connecting those two walls with some ceiling joists. For the greenhouse floor, Josh wanted something that could resist any standing water that would fall down from the plants. We found some engineered siding panels at Lowe's that are weather-resistant and come in large, 4' x 8' sheets. These panels are only 3/8" thick, so we added another layer of pressure treated 1/2" plywood to ensure the floor was strong enough to walk on. We fit three of these double-layered panels on top of the floor frame, making sure to cut around the wall studs and secured them with screws. For the greenhouse's exterior, it is possible to simply cover the bare frame with the clear polycarbonate sheets, but because of this greenhouse's size, that would take more than the 10 panels we allotted for this project. We had to order the sheets from Lowes.com and the came in a pack of 10. So rather than sacrificing the size of the greenhouse, Josh got creative and added a decorative element to the outside that helped use less polycarbonate. We decided to use the cutoffs of the engineered, exterior sheeting to make a skirting of wood panels that wrapped around the greenhouse. To cover any seams and to give the element some definition, Josh cut up some 1x4 trim pieces that really set the decorative element apart. It looked really nice and flowed super well with the overall design. Again, these step is optional, but it does look fantastic and it helps save on the more expensive material later. At this point in the project, we have a nice looking frame of a greenhouse. To make it functional as a greenhouse, we need a way to trap the radiant heat from the sun inside the structure. We found many ways to do this from using reclaimed windows, rolls of plastic tarp pulled tight, glass panes, and sheets of acrylic. In this video I make a super cheap, functional greenhouse with fold up walls for your garden. Let me know your thoughts! DIY greenhouse on a budget! How to build a greenhouse: Here's What you're going to need. A staple Gun. Staples. A knife with a sharp blade. A circular saw, a drill, an impact driver. And some wood screws. At least 1.5 inches. I used 2 inch screws. You can get away with just using a hand saw and a drill or a screw driver. But power tools makes life easier. Optional tools include a spirit level. A speed square. A pencil. And a carpenters belt. All handy but not required. Materials you'll need are. For the frame. I used 4 8 foot 2x2s. And 4 8 foot 2x1's. I ended up buying some 2x4's for my original design. But I didn't use them, as you will see later on For the walls …You'll also need a roll of Polyethyline… (Poly) or green house plastic. If you're not familiar with poly, it comes in various sizes. I got 6mil which I believe is the thickest you can buy. It came in a huge roll and unfolds to 102 inches wide, is 58 feet long and covers an area of 500 square feet. More than enough for this project. You can also see in the video that my poly says keep out of sunlight. If we were expecting this green house to last until our grandchildren inherit it, this poly would not be a good material to use. There is green house plastic on the market specifically designed for this use. Essentially, the UV's will start to breakdown poly ofter time, But, the house I'm living in is getting torn down next year so I only need this green house to last me this season. I was lucky enough to get this poly for free from a job site, so when this green house is finished I will only have spent under 20 dollars on materials. Look around. You can get most of these materials for free if you know where to look. Construction sites often through out lumber and gently used poly. In the end, I don't think it looks half bad. The walls fold up. I screwed in screws half way into the frame then hooked the string on to the screws. When ever I want to fold up a wall, I just unhook the string. Then in reverse when I want to secure them again. Nice and easy. An idea that worked surprisingly well! And for like 20 bucks and a day outside in the summer, it was well worth it. 🤍 Thorough notes here. Please read through and follow links for most/all info you may need... For the 3 metal arches, I used 1/2” galvanized EMT conduit pipe. 10’ length. I purchased these from a local hardware store for about $2 a piece The poly I use I sourced from 🤍 - A very reasonably priced source for greenhouse poly. I get the 6mil UV stabilized material which is quite robust. .05 cents a square foot, so less than $8 for this tunnel. You can bend the conduit piping using something called a ‘quick hoops bender’ from Johnnys. $60 is too expensive I think, but here is a link: 🤍 You can build your own EMT conduit bender in many ways. Here are a few links to research and learn from: 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 - 10 pack of clips to hold down poly on 1/2” metal EMT low tunnel, $6. Not bad… 🤍 - Another source to explore for PVC clips 🤍 - Here someone describes building a low tunnel with PVC tubing, but the innovation to perhaps check out is using garden hose to secure poly to the tubing… Might not hold great in the long run but would be easy to try. I used 10’ lengths of CPVC 3/4” tubing. Using a jig where I screwed it onto a long straight board I set a table saw to take off about a little less than 1/2 of it in one long pass, then cut them into various lengths and sanded down all edges and rounded over corners.
