Most people combine files from a folder with Power Query all wrong. In this video I show you why it’s wrong and the way you should be doing it. When Power Query combines files in a folder it automatically creates a bunch of queries for you. There are two queries that are important, the sample file query and the final query. Most people use the wrong query to make their transformations and wonder why they’re struggling. We'll use Excel Get and Transform aka Power Query to combine data from multiple Excel workbooks. We will directly connect to a folder that contains the files and use the feature Combine Files in Power Query. Any time you drop an Excel file in that folder, the data will be appended and consolidated with the rest. You can then create one Excel table for the appended data or create a pivot table from the multiple Excel files. The best part about using Power Query to merge data from Excel files is that you don't need to write any code! You just need to click a few buttons to append the data from the files. You can create your own free video library with Power Query Custom Data Types. You'll learn about Excel Power Query custom data types and how you can use this to optimize your Excel reports. Excel has a number of linked data types that you can use right away. But, you can also create your own data type from any supported data source by using Power Query. With this new feature, you can create custom data types and you can view the data in an Excel table, display it as an easy-to-read card, or use it in formulas. Power Query doesn't have a hyperlink data type, but you can create hyperlinks using data from Power Query by following the steps I show in the video. This way your Power Query results will be hyperlinked and clickable. We'll use Power Query custom data types to create a free library of all my YouTube tutorials in Excel.
